Frymaster 3000 Fryer Error Code E05: Hot HI 1

HOT HI 1 (E05) on a Frymaster OCF30 series electric fryer with the 3000 controller means the oil went past the high-limit temperature, 410F (210C), or 395F (202C) on CE units. The manual says to shut the fryer down immediately and call a Frymaster service agent.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the oil exceeded the high-limit temperature and the manual calls for an immediate shutdown.

What does Frymaster error code E05 HOT HI 1 mean?

The high-limit exists to stop oil from reaching a temperature where it can ignite. On the 3000 controller, when the high-limit temperature goes past 410F (210C), or 395F (202C) for CE units, the controller logs E05 and shows HOT HI 1. This is a real overtemperature, unlike E04, where only the reading is out of range. The oil has become hotter than the fryer is designed to allow, which means regulation failed or the heat was not shut off. The manual's instruction is blunt and complete: shut the fryer down immediately and call a Frymaster service agent. The manual lists no operator checks. The cause could be a stuck heating contactor, a probe reading that tells the controller the oil is cooler than it is, or a failed interface board, all of which need to be tested with power off. Do not use the fryer after this code.

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E05 HOT HI 1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A heating contactor stuck closed that keeps the elements energized
  • A temperature probe that reads cooler than the actual oil
  • An interface board that keeps heat on after the controller calls for it to stop

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Shut the fryer down and keep people away from the vat.
  2. Do not move or filter the hot oil; let it cool where it is.
  3. Do not restart the fryer to see whether the code returns.
  4. Tell the technician the vat, the time it happened and what was cooking.

How a technician diagnoses error code E05 HOT HI 1

  1. Confirm the fryer is off and the oil has cooled before any work begins.
  2. Read the error log for E05 and for earlier E03, E04 or E06 events.
  3. Lock out power and test the heating contactor for sticking contacts.
  4. Test the temperature probe and the high-limit thermostat.
  5. Check the interface board and controller, replacing parts only after the measurements.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Oil near or above 410F is a fire and burn hazard.
  • A stuck contactor or overtemperature circuit is live 208 to 240 V wiring that must be locked out.
  • Finding why the oil overheated needs the probe, high-limit and board tested in order.

How error code E05 HOT HI 1 differs from similar codes

E05 is a true overtemperature event; E04 means the high-limit reading is out of range.
