Pitco Commercial Fryer Error Code SYSTEM FAILURE: Probe Short
SYSTEM / FAILURE on a Pitco Solstice computer control is a temperature probe circuit problem. The service manual tests the probe, wires and connectors for a short. Call a technician.
High: the controller has no valid oil temperature and cannot control heating.
What does Pitco SYSTEM FAILURE mean?
Despite its name, SYSTEM FAILURE on the Solstice computer control is not a broad system problem. The service manual puts it in the same group as PROBE OP, the probe circuit group, and the test it gives is for a short. A shorted circuit is one where the probe's wires touch each other, or the probe has failed so that it gives a very low or zero resistance. The controller then reads a value that is outside what a real temperature could give, and shows SYSTEM / FAILURE. The test is simple in principle: check the probe, the wires and the connectors between the probe and controller for a short. The probe sits in hot oil and heat cycles can crack its insulation, and a cable that rubs against a metal edge can wear through. The machine can no longer read oil temperature, so heating is not controlled.
Affected models and control systems
Pitco Solstice and Solstice Supreme SG/SSH series high-efficiency gas fryers. This page covers the computer control (manual p. 82).
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- SYSTEM / FAILURE on the display
- Fryer will not heat normally
- Temperature reading missing or impossible
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind SYSTEM FAILURE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Probe element failed shorted
- Probe cable insulation worn through against metal
- Water or oil inside a probe connector
- Pinched wire at the controller plug
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the fryer off and let the oil cool.
- Check that nothing has been dropped onto the probe or its cable.
- Do not pull on the cable or reach into hot oil.
- Tell us the display and the model.
How a technician diagnoses SYSTEM FAILURE
- Read the display and distinguish it from PROBE OP.
- Test the probe resistance and check for a short.
- Test the wires and connectors between the probe and controller for a short.
- Inspect the cable for abrasion and moisture.
- Replace the probe or wiring and confirm a normal heat-up.
- The probe works in hot oil, and the controller circuits are live.
- Short tests need the fryer cool and isolated, with a meter.
How SYSTEM FAILURE differs from similar codes
SYSTEM FAILURE here is a probe short, not a general fault; PROBE OP is the open-circuit version.

Related Pitco fryer error codes
Does SYSTEM FAILURE mean the whole fryer failed?
No. The manual treats it as a probe circuit short.
How is it different from PROBE OP?
PROBE OP is an open circuit, SYSTEM FAILURE is a short.
Can I run the fryer until the technician comes?
No. Without a valid temperature reading it cannot control the oil.
