Vulcan Commercial Fryer Error Code PROBE SHORT: Probe Circuit Shorted

PROBE SHORT is how the Computer (C) control on a Vulcan PowerFry words a shorted temperature probe circuit. The control sees a reading it cannot use and stops the burner, so the oil does not heat. Turn the fryer off, let everything cool, restart once and call us if it stays.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the burner stops and the fryer cannot heat until the probe circuit is repaired.

What does Vulcan PROBE SHORT mean?

The probe in the vat changes resistance with oil temperature, and the Computer (C) control converts that resistance into a temperature. If the two probe wires touch each other, or the sensor itself shorts, the resistance falls far below anything real oil temperature could produce. The control recognizes the reading as impossible, shows PROBE SHORT and stops the burner, so the oil does not heat. It is the Computer version of the message the digital control calls SHORTED PROBE. The most common causes are a lead pinched under a panel, a probe that has been damaged or a connector that is wet or caked with grease. Since the fryer cannot heat safely without a good reading, there is no workaround at the controls. A restart after cooling shows whether the short was temporary, such as moisture that has since dried.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Vulcan VK/TR PowerFry gas fryers with the Computer (C) control, such as the 1TR45, 1VK65 and 2TR85. The Solid State (D) control shows SHORTED PROBE.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • PROBE SHORT on the display
  • Burner off, vat not heating
  • Message appearing after a washdown
  • Message back right after restart

Possible causes

Listed in Vulcan's documentation

  • The probe lead and its path through the fryer
  • The probe connector
  • The probe
  • The probe input on the computer

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PROBE SHORT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Lead rubbed through its insulation against a sharp panel edge
  • Wash water in the connector bridging the two contacts
  • Probe element damaged by a knock from a basket or scraper

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the fryer off and let everything cool.
  2. Keep clear of hot oil and do not drain it.
  3. Turn the fryer back on and read the display.
  4. If PROBE SHORT is still there, call us.
  5. If anyone notices a gas odor, go outside and call the gas utility.

How a technician diagnoses PROBE SHORT

  1. Read the message and note whether washdown preceded it.
  2. Disconnect the probe and measure its resistance.
  3. Inspect the lead and connector for moisture and pinch points.
  4. Check the control input with the probe removed from the circuit.
  5. Replace the lead or the probe if it reads shorted.
  6. Dry or replace the connector and check normal heat-up.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Probe checks mean disconnecting parts around a vat of oil and a gas burner.
  • Telling a shorted probe from a bad control input takes a meter.
  • The input is on a board in a live control compartment.

How PROBE SHORT differs from similar codes

PROBE SHORT is the Computer (C) wording; the Solid State (D) control displays SHORTED PROBE for the same condition.

PROBE SHORTQuestions about Vulcan PROBE SHORT
Does PROBE SHORT mean the oil is too hot?

No. It reports an electrical short in the probe circuit, not oil temperature.

Can moisture cause it?

Yes. Water or grease in the connector can bridge the contacts, and drying may clear it.

Is it the same as PROBE OPEN?

No. OPEN is a break in the circuit, and SHORT is wires touching.
