Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E11: Group 3 24 V Short Circuit
E11 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit 24V group 3: the 24 V supply of brew group 3 is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: an electrical short on a group circuit needs the machine off and a technician.

What does Rancilio error code E11 mean?
The third brew group, on machines that have one, has its own 24 volt supply for the parts that control water and coffee flow. The control watches that supply, and when the current rises far above normal, it treats it as a short circuit, cuts the supply to protect the board and shows E11 Short circuit 24V group 3. Most often this means a solenoid coil or its lead on group 3 is drawing too much current. Group 3 can go out of use until the short is found. The manual lists the code without a separate operator step. Since the cause is electrical, in a wet and hot area of the machine, searching for it is a technician's job. The code is only meaningful on a machine with at least three groups, because a group that does not exist cannot short. If you see E11 on such a machine, tell the technician which group position was in use at the time.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius espresso machines. We read the List of errors in the 07/2014 edition of the manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E11 on the display
- Group 3 not brewing
- Groups 1 and 2 may still work
- Warm or discolored wiring near group 3
- Display flickers when group 3 is used
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E11 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Group 3 solenoid coil shorted
- Wire insulation worn through
- Water inside a group 3 connector
- Board output for group 3 failing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the main switch.
- Do not use group 3.
- Keep water away from the electrical parts.
- Do not open the panels.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them the code is E11 for group 3.
How a technician diagnoses error code E11
- Read E11 and the error history to see whether it appears on start-up or when group 3 is used.
- Isolate the group 3 loads one at a time to find which one clears the short.
- Measure the coil resistance of the group 3 solenoid and compare it with the other groups.
- Inspect the group 3 wiring and connectors for rub marks, heat damage and moisture.
- Check the board output that feeds the group 3 supply.
- Replace the shorted part and then confirm the 24 V supply is stable during brewing.
- Short circuits are traced with the machine open and powered, close to line-voltage parts.
- A short that is left in place can overheat wiring and damage the control board.
- Water near live parts is a shock hazard, and the groups are a wet area.
How error code E11 differs from similar codes
E09, E10 and E12 are the same short for groups 1, 2 and 4.

Related Rancilio espresso machine error codes
Can E11 appear on a two-group machine?
No. The code names group 3, which only exists on machines with a third group.
Can I keep brewing on the other groups?
Often yes, once a technician confirms that the other group circuits are safe.
Will switching off clear E11?
Switching off does not remove a short, so the code can return as soon as group 3 is used.
Need help with Rancilio error code E11?
A technician confirms the cause on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
