Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E12: Group 4 24 V Short Circuit

E12 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit 24V group 4: the 24 V supply of brew group 4 is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.

Medium · inspection needed

High: an electrical short on a group circuit needs the machine off and a technician.

What does Rancilio error code E12 mean?

The fourth brew group, on machines that have one, has its own 24 volt supply for the parts that switch water and coffee flow. The control monitors it, and when the current rises far above normal, it cuts the supply to protect the board and shows E12 Short circuit 24V group 4. The usual suspects are the solenoid coil or the wire that feeds it. Group 4 may stop working until the short is repaired, and the other three groups usually keep running. The manual lists the code with no operator step, and an electrical short on a hot, damp machine is not something to track down at the counter. The code can only appear on a machine with four groups. If you see it, tell the technician which group was in use and whether it happened at start-up or when the group began to brew, since that narrows down which part is drawing the current.

What you may notice

  • E12 on the display
  • Group 4 not brewing
  • The other groups may still work
  • Hot insulation smell near group 4
  • Display flickers when group 4 is used

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E12 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Group 4 solenoid coil shorted
  • Lead rubbed through near group 4
  • Moisture in the group 4 connector
  • Board output for group 4 failing

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off at the main switch.
  2. Do not use group 4.
  3. Keep water away from the group wiring.
  4. Do not open the panels.
  5. Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them the code is E12 for group 4.

How a technician diagnoses error code E12

  1. Read E12 and the error history to see how often it appears and in what situation.
  2. Disconnect the group 4 loads one at a time to find which part is causing the short.
  3. Measure the coil resistance of the group 4 solenoid and compare it with the other groups.
  4. Inspect cables and connectors on group 4 for chafing, burn marks and moisture.
  5. Check the board output that supplies group 4.
  6. Replace the shorted part and confirm the 24 V supply holds steady during brewing.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Tracing a short means measuring live circuits with the machine open.
  • Overheated wiring can damage the control board, so the machine should stay off until it is checked.
  • The group area is hot and wet, so an electrical problem there carries a shock risk.

How error code E12 differs from similar codes

E09, E10 and E11 are the same short for groups 1, 2 and 3.

E12Questions about Rancilio error code E12
Which machines can show E12?

Only machines with a fourth group. On a smaller machine the code cannot apply.

Can I use the other three groups?

Often yes, once a technician confirms that the circuits for those groups are safe.

Does a restart help?

A restart does not remove a short, so the code can return as soon as group 4 is used.
