Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E16: Flowmeter 12 V Short
E16 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit 12V flowmeter: the 12 V supply of the flowmeter is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: the flowmeter supply is shorted and the groups cannot dose properly.

What does Rancilio error code E16 mean?
Each group on the Classe 11 measures the water it delivers with a flowmeter, and the control counts the flowmeter pulses to end the shot at the right volume. The flowmeters run from a 12 volt supply. If that supply is shorted, the control sees too much current, cuts the supply to protect the board and records E16 Short circuit 12V flowmeter. With the flowmeters unpowered, the groups cannot dose properly, so shots may run on or stop at the wrong moment until the circuit is repaired. A short can come from one flowmeter, from a cable pinched near the group, or from water in a connector. Because the supply is shared, the code does not tell you which group is the source. The manual lists it without an operator remedy, so a technician has to isolate the cause.

What you may notice
- E16 on the display
- Shots not ending at the programmed volume
- Groups dosing wrongly or not at all
- Flowmeter warnings such as W01 appearing as well
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E16 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- One flowmeter shorted internally
- Flowmeter cable pinched or chafed near the group
- Water in a flowmeter connector
- Board 12 V flowmeter output failing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the main switch.
- Do not run shots on a timer to work around the code.
- Check for water leaking onto the connectors under the groups, and wipe up spills.
- Do not open panels or unplug flowmeters.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them the code is E16 and which groups dosed wrongly.
How a technician diagnoses error code E16
- Read E16 and the error history.
- Disconnect the flowmeters one by one and see when the short clears.
- Measure the 12 V supply with all flowmeters unplugged.
- Inspect the cables and connectors for chafing and moisture.
- Check the board output for the flowmeter supply.
- Replace the shorted flowmeter or cable and verify dosing on each group.
- Isolating a shared supply means unplugging parts in a wet area of the machine.
- A short on the supply can damage the control board.
- Dosing must be calibrated after a flowmeter is replaced, using the machine's own settings.
How error code E16 differs from similar codes
W01 to W03 report no flowmeter signal on a single group, while E16 is a short on the supply that feeds the flowmeters.

Related Rancilio espresso machine error codes
Does E16 affect every group?
It can, because the flowmeters share one supply.
Can I run shots by time?
Not safely. The machine is protecting its board, and the cause should be found first.
Is E16 the same as W01?
No. W01 is about the signal from one group, and E16 is a short on the supply.
