What does Rancilio error code E17 mean?
The Classe 11 control board has a low-voltage 5 volt supply that it sends outside the board to other parts, such as accessories and the control side of the machine. The manual calls it the external 5 V supply. The board monitors the current on it, and when a load or lead shorts, the current rises, the board cuts the supply to protect itself and records E17 Short circuit 5V ext. The effect depends on what the supply feeds. The display, keys or accessories may misbehave or stop, and the machine may not run normally. A short here can come from a damaged cable, a connector with water in it, or a failed accessory. Because the supply is low voltage, the risk is more to the electronics than to the user, but a short is still a reason to switch off and call.
