Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E18: Power Board 12 V Short
E18 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit 12V power board: the 12 V supply of the power board is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: the power board supply is shorted and the machine may refuse to run.

What does Rancilio error code E18 mean?
The Classe 11 has a power board that switches the machine's loads, such as the pump, the valves and the heating. That board has its own 12 volt supply for its control side. When that supply is shorted, the current jumps, the board shuts the supply down to protect itself and the control records E18 Short circuit 12V power board. A short on the 12 V side can come from the board itself, from a part it feeds, or from a damaged lead or wet connector. Because the power board controls the loads, the machine may refuse to run until the circuit is repaired. The manual lists the code without an operator remedy. This is a deeper electronics matter than the group and sensor codes, and an operator should not search for it.

Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E18 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Power board damaged by water or a past surge
- A device on the 12 V line shorted
- Cable between the boards pinched or burned
- Connector between the control and power boards corroded
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the main switch.
- Do not try to restart it repeatedly.
- Look for water on or around the machine and keep it away from connectors.
- Do not open the control box.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and describe what stopped working.
How a technician diagnoses error code E18
- Read E18 and the error history.
- Disconnect the loads fed from the 12 V supply and see when the short clears.
- Measure the 12 V rail on the power board.
- Inspect the board for burn marks, moisture and corrosion.
- Check the cables and connectors between the control and power boards.
- Replace the shorted device or the power board.
- The power board handles line-voltage loads, and testing it is live work.
- Water or heat damage on a board is judged by inspection and measurement.
- Replacing a power board means resetting the machine's configuration.
How error code E18 differs from similar codes
E17 is the external 5 V version of the short, and E15 and E16 are 12 V shorts on the pressure sensor and flowmeter supplies.

Why does E18 stop so many functions?
The power board switches the main loads, so a problem on its supply affects several functions.
Can I clean the board?
No. Leave the control box closed and call a technician.
Is E18 related to E15 or E16?
They are all 12 V shorts, but on different circuits.
