Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E19: Boiler Over Pressure
E19 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Over pressure boiler: boiler pressure has gone above its limit. Switch the machine off, keep clear of the steam wand and the boiler, and contact a Rancilio service technician. The manual gives no operator remedy.
High: boiler over-pressure is a safety hazard and the machine must stay off.

What does Rancilio error code E19 mean?
The control watches boiler pressure through the pressure sensor and switches the heating off when the working pressure is reached. If the pressure goes above the allowed limit, the control records E19 Over pressure boiler and cuts what it can. This is a safety message, and it matters more than most codes in this list. The boiler is a pressure vessel, and steam and hot water at high pressure can scald. Pressure can run too high because the heating did not switch off, the pressure sensor is reading low, or the pressure relief is not working as it should. The control cannot tell which of these is the cause. The manual lists the code with no operator remedy. The safe action for an operator is to switch the machine off, let it cool, and leave every valve and fitting alone.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius espresso machines. We read the List of errors in the 07/2014 edition of the manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E19 on the display
- Pressure gauge reading high
- Steam or hissing from the safety valve
- Heating not switching off
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E19 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Heating element or its relay stuck on
- Pressure sensor reading lower than actual pressure
- Safety valve blocked by scale
- Steam wand valve closed while the boiler heated
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the main switch.
- Keep away from the steam wand and the boiler, and do not open any valve or fitting.
- Let the machine cool completely before going near it.
- Do not restart it until a technician has checked it.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them what the pressure gauge showed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E19
- Read E19 and the error history, and check whether pressure or sensor codes came before it.
- Wait for the boiler to cool and depressurize before opening anything.
- Compare the pressure sensor reading with a test gauge.
- Check that the heating relay and element switch off at the set pressure.
- Test the safety valve for blockage and correct opening.
- Replace the failed part and run the boiler to pressure while watching the gauge.
- An over-pressure boiler can release scalding steam and water.
- Testing the heating relay and element means working at line voltage.
- Checking and replacing a safety valve is work on a pressure safety device.
How error code E19 differs from similar codes
E02 reports pressure that did not build, while E19 reports pressure that went too high.

Is E19 an emergency?
It is a safety code, so switch the machine off, keep clear and call a technician.
Can I release the pressure myself?
No. Do not open valves or fittings; let the machine cool.
Is E19 the same as E02?
No. E02 is low pressure and E19 is over pressure.
