Rancilio Espresso Machine Warning W01: No Flowmeter Signal, Group 1
W01 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads No signal from flowmeter group 1: the control receives no flowmeter signal from group 1. The manual gives no operator remedy, so contact a Rancilio service technician. Other groups should dose normally.
Medium: one group cannot dose by volume, while the rest of the machine works.

What does Rancilio error code W01 mean?
Every group on the Classe 11 has a flowmeter that counts the water passing through it. The control uses the count to end the shot at the programmed volume. When no pulses arrive from group 1 while the group is running, the control records W01 No signal from flowmeter group 1. It cannot measure the water, so group 1 cannot dose by volume. Shots may run on or stop at the wrong moment, while the other groups stay fine, which is how you can tell the problem is limited to that one group. The common reasons are a flowmeter that has stopped counting, a cable that has come loose, a blocked line or water that is not flowing through the group at all. The manual lists the warning without an operator remedy.
Affected models and control systems
Rancilio Classe 11 espresso machines (USB and Xcelsius), from the manual's List of errors. The edition we read is dated 07/2014.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- W01 on the display
- Group 1 shots running on or stopping wrongly
- Volume not matching the programmed dose
- Other groups dosing correctly
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code W01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Group 1 flowmeter turbine stuck with scale
- Flowmeter cable loose at the connector
- Group 1 water path blocked so no water flows
- Cable chafed near group 1
Safe checks before calling for service
- Run a manual shot on group 1 and see whether water actually flows.
- Check for leaks or water on the connectors under group 1.
- Use the other groups until it is checked.
- Do not unplug the flowmeter while the machine is on.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them how group 1 behaves on programmed and manual shots.
How a technician diagnoses error code W01
- Read W01 and the error history.
- Confirm water flows through group 1 on a manual shot.
- Check the flowmeter connector and cable.
- Check the flowmeter for scale or debris.
- Measure the flowmeter signal on the board while water flows.
- Replace the flowmeter or cable and recalibrate group 1 dosing.
- Checking the signal at the board means working in the open machine with line-voltage parts nearby.
- Dosing has to be recalibrated with the machine's own settings after a flowmeter is replaced.
- If water does not flow, the cause is in the group's water path, which needs disassembly.
How error code W01 differs from similar codes
W02 and W03 are the same warning for groups 2 and 3, and E16 is a short on the shared flowmeter supply.
