Eversys Cameo Coffee Machine Error Code E-017: Boiler Overheating

On a Cameo, E-017 means the coffee boiler is overheating, and the machine enters standby mode. Leave it in standby to cool, check that water can flow freely, and note whether the filter reminder is on. Do not restart repeatedly; call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the control cut the heat to a boiler that was overheating, so coffee cannot be made until it is checked.

What does Eversys error code E-017 mean?

The Cameo has a single coffee boiler, and the control watches its temperature all the time. When the boiler gets hotter than it should, the control cuts off the heat and puts the machine in standby mode. The display holds E-017 until the machine has cooled and been checked, and coffee drinks stop at once. Overheating means the heat going in is more than the heat going out. That points in a few directions, which the maker's list covers: the boiler temperature sensor may be reading wrong, the heater switching and safety may not be turning the heat off, water may not be reaching the boiler so there is little to absorb the heat, or scale on the heating element may be insulating it. On a Cameo, which has one coffee boiler, all of that applies to the same part, so the test is more direct than on a two-boiler machine. Staff can help by letting the machine cool and by looking at the water tap and the supply hose. In a city with hard water, a filter that is overdue speeds up scale, so mention the filter reminder when you call. Repeated restarts only stress a hot boiler.

Affected models and control systems

Eversys Cameo, which has one coffee boiler. The Enigma and Shotmaster show E-017 for the left boiler and E-018 for the right.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E-017 appears and coffee drinks stop
  • The machine falls back to standby
  • The boiler area is very hot
  • The filter reminder is on or overdue

Possible causes

Listed in Eversys's documentation

  • Coffee boiler temperature sensor reading wrongly
  • Heater switching or safety not turning the heat off
  • Poor water supply or flow to the coffee boiler
  • Scale on the heating element

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-017 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A temperature sensor that has drifted so it under-reads the boiler
  • A supply hose partly kinked behind the machine so little water reaches the boiler
  • A heater relay whose contacts stick closed after years of switching

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Leave the machine in standby and give it time to cool.
  2. Look at the water tap and the supply hose to see that water can flow freely.
  3. Check the filter reminder and tell us if the filter is due.
  4. Hold off on repeated restarts and call us instead.
  5. Tell us how long the machine had been running before the message appeared.

How a technician diagnoses error code E-017

  1. Let the boiler cool fully and read E-017.
  2. Check water supply, pressure and the flow to the coffee boiler.
  3. Read the boiler temperature and compare it with a reference reading to test the sensor.
  4. Test the heater output and the safety device for switching off correctly.
  5. Inspect the element for scale and descale as needed.
  6. Replace the part that tests bad and run a full test while watching the temperature.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A boiler that overheated holds hot water and pressure.
  • The sensor, the heater relay and the water supply each need separate tests with a meter.
  • Descaling an element needs the boiler open and cooled.

How error code E-017 differs from similar codes

On the Enigma and Shotmaster the same number, E-017, means the left coffee boiler; this page is about the single-boiler Cameo.

E-017Questions about Eversys error code E-017
Is it safe to restart right away?

Let it cool first, and hold off on repeated restarts.

Does the filter matter?

Yes. An overdue filter lets scale build up on the heating element.

Is E-017 the same on every Eversys?

No. On two-boiler machines it refers to the left boiler.
