AccuTemp Steamer Error Code -1F: Open Temperature Probe
-1F on an AccuTemp Evolution electric steamer means the control sees its temperature probe as open, as if the probe were unplugged or broken. Without that signal the steamer cannot judge cabinet temperature, so it may never reach steam. Shut it off, let it cool, confirm power and water, and try one restart before calling us.
Medium: the steamer cannot hold temperature, but it can be shut off safely and nothing is damaged by waiting for service.

What does AccuTemp error code -1F mean?
The Evolution electric control reads the cabinet temperature through a small RTD probe, a sensor whose resistance changes with heat. Every time it samples the probe, it expects a resistance that falls inside a believable range. When the circuit is open, the resistance looks infinite, as if the wire had been cut, and the control prints -1F in place of the temperature. It has no way to tell a cold cabinet from a dead sensor, so it stops trusting the reading and does not manage heat the way it should. The steamer may never build steam, or it may start and then quit heating partway through a load. This is a protective response: a control that cannot see temperature should not guess. The message concerns the sensing circuit, meaning the probe, its lead and the board input, and not the heating elements or the water supply.
Affected models and control systems
This page applies to AccuTemp Evolution electric 3-pan and 6-pan steamers with the E3/E6 control board, as described in the Evolution Electric service manual. Gas and propane Evolution steamers and older AccuTemp controls use different troubleshooting tables.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- -1F appears where the cabinet temperature normally shows
- The steamer heats slowly, or never reaches steam
- The display returns to -1F right after a restart
Possible causes
Listed in AccuTemp's documentation
- Probe wires loose or broken between the probe and the control board
- Probe failed, with a resistance outside its expected value
- Probe input on the control board failed
- Probe lead damaged by heat or steam
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code -1F on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A probe lead that has been flexed or pulled each time the cabinet door or pan rack is moved, so the conductor is broken inside the insulation
- A probe connector at the board that has loosened after months of steam and heat cycles
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the steamer off and leave the cabinet alone until it has fully cooled.
- Confirm power reaches the unit and the breaker is on.
- See that the water valve is open and nothing obvious is sitting in the cabinet.
- Turn it on once more and watch for -1F.
- If -1F comes back, stop and call us. Note whether it appeared at startup or after the steamer had been running, because that helps us separate a loose connection from a failed probe.
How a technician diagnoses error code -1F
- Confirm -1F is steady rather than flickering.
- With power locked off, inspect the probe lead along its full length for pinches, burns or steam damage.
- Disconnect the probe and measure its resistance at room temperature against the manual's expected value.
- Check the connector and the board input for corrosion or a loose pin.
- Replace the probe or the board only after the meter result points to it, then run a full cycle to confirm.
- The probe, its wiring and the board input all show the same -1F, so only a meter can say which failed.
- Testing the board's probe input means live voltage inside the control area, which is work for a trained technician.
How error code -1F differs from similar codes
-99F on the same control means the probe reads shorted instead of open. The cause is in the same circuit, but the failure inside it is the opposite one.

Can I keep using the steamer with -1F showing?
Not reliably. With no temperature reading, heating is unpredictable.
Will -1F go away on its own?
It can clear for a while if a connection was only slightly loose, but an open probe circuit tends to return as the cabinet heats up.
Is -1F the same as -99F?
No. -1F points to an open probe circuit, while -99F points to a shorted one. Both mean the control has lost a usable temperature reading.
