AccuTemp Steamer Error Code Low Water Light: Water Below Sensor

The Low Water light with PRE-HEAT on the control means the water in the steam chamber is below the low water sensor, so the heater contactor will not close. On a manual-fill unit, fill the chamber first and the alarm should stop; on an auto-fill unit the chamber should fill by itself. If the light stays on, clean the sensors first, and then a technician should check the fill valve and water board.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the heater contactor stays open and the steamer will not heat until water reaches the sensor.

What does AccuTemp Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown mean?

The Evolution steamer watches the water level in the steam chamber with two sensors, which are steel studs with white Teflon on the inside of the left chamber wall. Heating is only allowed while those sensors are covered with water. When the water falls below them, the control lights the Low Water indicator, shows PRE-HEAT, and keeps the heater contactor open so the heating system cannot run dry. On an auto-fill unit the water level board opens the fill valve until the sensor is satisfied. On a manual-fill unit the operator has to add the water, and the alarm sounds until the level is reached. The display reads: Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown on the control; audible alarm on manual-fill units only. A steamer stuck in this state is not receiving water, or its sensors are too dirty to read it.

Affected models and control systems

Evolution electric steamers (manual SP8026-2508) and Evolution gas/propane steamers (manual SP8026-1902). The gas manual describes the same low water sensor logic; the electric manual is the one we checked in detail.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Low Water indicator light stays lit
  • PRE-HEAT remains on the control and the steamer does not start heating
  • An audible alarm that continues on a manual-fill unit

Possible causes

Listed in AccuTemp's documentation

  • Low water sensor not satisfied because the sensors are dirty or no water has been supplied
  • Water level board has failed
  • Auto-fill solenoid valve is not opening

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • White mineral film on the sensor studs, so the board reads a dry chamber
  • Water supply valve to the steamer closed or the supply line kinked behind the unit
  • Loose pink wire at J9 on the water level board

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the steamer off and let the chamber cool.
  2. On a manual-fill unit, check that the chamber has actually been filled, and fill it if it has not.
  3. Check that the water supply valve to the steamer is open and the line is not kinked.
  4. Wipe the sensor studs on the left chamber wall with a soft cloth, never steel wool, then restart.
  5. Note whether the unit is manual-fill or auto-fill and whether the alarm sounds, for the technician.

How a technician diagnoses Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown

  1. Confirm the fill type and watch whether the chamber fills with the supply open.
  2. Inspect and clean the sensor studs, the first item the manual names.
  3. Read the water level board LED on D3: a 1-second flash means no water sensed, a 3-second flash means the sensor is satisfied.
  4. Check the pink wire at J9 for a secure connection.
  5. Test the auto-fill solenoid valve for coil voltage and water flow, then replace the water level board or valve only if the tests point to it.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The water level board and the sensor wiring are mains-powered controls inside the cabinet, and testing them means working near live line voltage.
  • Reading the D3 LED and the J9 wire needs the cover removed.

How Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown differs from similar codes

Manual-fill units sound an alarm until you add water. Auto-fill units show the light and PRE-HEAT while the chamber fills, with no alarm.

Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shownQuestions about AccuTemp Low Water indicator light ON; PRE-HEAT shown
Why does my steamer beep when it has the Low Water light on?

The manual says the alarm sounds only on manual-fill units. Add water and it should stop.

Will the Low Water light clear itself?

On an auto-fill steamer it clears once the chamber fills and the sensor is satisfied. If it stays on with the supply open, the fill or the sensing is blocked.

Can I keep cooking if only the light is on?

No. The heater contactor cannot close while the sensor is dry, so the steamer will not heat until the water level is restored.
