AccuTemp Steamer Water Level Board LED D3: 1-Second Flash

On AccuTemp Evolution steamers, the D3 LED on the water level board flashing once per second means the board does not sense water in the chamber. It should close the relay that feeds the autofill solenoid. If water never arrives, the steamer keeps asking for it and will not heat.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the steamer will not heat until water is sensed, but it can be switched off safely.

What does AccuTemp Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash mean?

Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash is a status light on the board that guards the steamer's water level. Two sensors in the cooking cabinet tell the board whether water is present. When the board does not sense water, it is supposed to close a relay that sends power to the autofill solenoid, which opens and lets water in. The one-second flash is the board announcing that it is asking for water. Heat stays off during this time, because heating a chamber with no water would damage it. If water arrives, the sensors see it, the flash changes and normal heating begins. If water never arrives, the board keeps asking and the steamer never heats. You may also see the low water light. The reason can be on the supply side, such as a closed valve or a solenoid that does not open, or on the sensing side, such as scaled sensors that cannot tell water is there. The board's relay and wiring are the remaining parts of the loop.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to AccuTemp Evolution steamers, both electric and gas, that use the water level board described in the Evolution service manual. The flash timings are specific to this board.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The D3 LED flashes once per second
  • The low water light is on
  • The steamer will not heat
  • No water sound from the autofill solenoid

Possible causes

Listed in AccuTemp's documentation

  • Water supply closed or autofill solenoid not opening
  • Water sensors in the cooking cabinet coated or failed
  • Water level board or its relay failed
  • Wiring to the sensors broken or loose

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Hard-water scale on the two sensors so they never register water even after the chamber is full
  • An inlet strainer clogged with sediment that lets only a trickle reach the solenoid

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Shut the steamer off and allow the chamber to cool down.
  2. Confirm the water supply is open.
  3. Wipe the two water sensors in the cooking cabinet with a soft cloth; never use steel wool or metal pads.
  4. Switch the steamer back on.
  5. If water doesn't fill, stop and call us. Tell us whether you heard the solenoid click.

How a technician diagnoses Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash

  1. Watch the D3 LED and the low water light through a fill request.
  2. Verify water supply pressure and the inlet strainer.
  3. Check voltage reaching the autofill solenoid when the relay closes.
  4. Inspect the sensors and their wiring; test the board relay output.
  5. Replace the solenoid, sensor or board only after the test isolates it.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The board's relay sends live voltage to the autofill solenoid, so testing it means working on a powered circuit.
  • Water and electricity share the cabinet, and panel work there calls for a trained technician.
  • Scale on the sensors builds up out of sight and has to be removed with the right method, not a metal pad.

How Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash differs from similar codes

A three-second flash on the same LED means the board is satisfied with the water level, which is the opposite situation from this one.

Water level board LED D3: 1-second flashQuestions about AccuTemp Water level board LED D3: 1-second flash
Does the one-second flash mean the board is broken?

No. It is the board reporting that it senses no water and is asking for a fill. The reason water does not arrive is what needs tracing.

Can I fill the chamber by hand?

We advise against it. The steamer's fill system and sensors should do this, and bypassing them hides the problem.

Why do the sensors matter?

Scaled sensors can fail to register water that is there, so the board keeps requesting more. Cleaning them gently is the safe first step.
