Frymaster M3000 Fryer Error Code E09: Pump Not Filling
ERROR PUMP NOT FILLING (E09) on a Frymaster Gen II LOV fryer with the M3000 computer means oil is not returning to the vat quickly after filtering. The manual says to check the filter pad, O-rings, filter pump, actuators and linkage. Call service if the check does not find it.
Medium: filtering cannot be completed properly, but the fryer can still cook with the oil level watched.
What does Frymaster error pump not filling mean?
After a filter cycle, the M3000 computer expects the filter pump to push oil back into the vat within a set time. If the oil does not return quickly enough, it logs E09 and shows ERROR PUMP NOT FILLING. The message tells you that the oil path from the filter pan to the vat is restricted or incomplete. The manual points to several places to look: the filter pad, the O-rings, the filter pump, the actuators and the linkage. A clogged or misplaced pad slows the flow, a worn O-ring lets the pump draw air, and a pump or actuator that does not move completely prevents the right valves from opening. These are the parts that the manual lists, and the manual gives no other cause. The code is on the M3000 table for Gen II LOV fryers and is not found on the 3000/3010 controller.
Affected models and control systems
Gen II LOV fryers with the M3000 computer, BIELA14 series electric; the BIGLA30 gas fryer uses the same computer family.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- ERROR PUMP NOT FILLING on the computer
- Oil that comes back slowly or not at all after filtering
- Pump running with a loud or dry sound
- Vat level lower than normal after a filter run
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error pump not filling on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A filter pad that is clogged with sediment or installed crooked
- Worn or missing O-rings at the filter pan connection that let the pump pull air
- A pump that is slow because of cold, thick shortening
- Actuator or linkage that does not open the return path all the way
Safe checks before calling for service
- Make sure the filter pan is fully pushed in and the pad is flat and clean, following the fryer's filtering instructions.
- Check that shortening was hot enough to flow before filtering.
- Look for oil on the floor or at the pan connection that could show a leak.
- Note which vat it was and what the pan and pad looked like, and call service.
How a technician diagnoses error pump not filling
- Read the error log for E09 and for related valve codes such as E12 or E13.
- Check the filter pad, pad support and the pan's O-rings.
- Test the filter pump operation and listen for air being drawn.
- Check actuator travel and the linkage for binding or wear.
- Verify return valve operation and replace the worn part.
- Pump, actuator and valve checks involve hot oil and live wiring.
- Reading related valve codes together takes the error log and the manual.
- A restricted return path can be several parts, and replacing them at random is expensive.
How error pump not filling differs from similar codes
E09 is a slow oil return after filtering; E12 and E13 are the return valve failing to open or close.

Is it safe to keep cooking?
The manual does not require stopping. Keep an eye on the oil level and avoid filtering until the cause is found.
Is a new pad the fix?
Often the pad is the first thing the manual lists. If a clean pad does not help, the pump, O-rings or linkage need testing.
How is E09 different from E12?
E09 is slow oil return. E12 means the return valve failed to open.
