Nor-Lake LogiTemp Walk-In Alarm Code EA1: External Alarm 1 Active

EA1 on a Nor-Lake LogiTemp walk-in means the External Alarm 1 input is active. Aux Input 1 has been set to External Alarm, and something wired to it has tripped. The code says an outside device signaled a problem, not that the controller failed, so check the box temperature and look around the walk-in.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: an outside device has signaled a problem that needs to be identified, though the box may still be cold.

What does Nor-Lake error code EA1 mean?

Nor-Lake LogiTemp controllers let an installer assign an auxiliary input to a job. When Aux Input 1 is set to External Alarm, the controller watches a contact wired to it, and when that contact trips, it shows EA1. What the contact guards depends on the installation. It might be a safety switch, a float switch, a pressure device or another device near the walk-in. The controller itself did exactly what it should: it saw an outside signal and reported it. That is why EA1 does not point to a failed controller. It points to the device, its wiring and contact, how Aux Input 1 was set up, or the condition the device is guarding against. The job is to find out whether the condition is real, such as water on the floor or a tripped switch, or whether the device or its wire is misreporting. A technician starts by finding which device is on the input, since the code itself does not say.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to LogiTemp controllers on Nor-Lake walk-in coolers and freezers where Aux Input 1 is configured as External Alarm.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EA1 on the display with an alarm LED
  • Box temperature normal on a thermometer
  • Water, noise or a tripped switch near the equipment
  • Alarm that returns after being cleared

Possible causes

Listed in Nor-Lake's documentation

  • The device wired to Aux Input 1 has tripped
  • Wiring or contact on that input
  • How Aux Input 1 is set up on the controller
  • The condition the device guards against

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EA1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Float switch lifted by a plugged condensate line
  • Safety switch on the condensing section opened by a hot or dirty unit
  • Contact corroded by humidity, so it reads open like a real trip

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Note the code and the LED color.
  2. Put a thermometer in the box and read it.
  3. Look near the walk-in for anything that looks wrong, such as water on the floor or a tripped switch you can see.
  4. Call us to schedule service and tell us what you noticed.

How a technician diagnoses error code EA1

  1. Read EA1 and identify the device on Aux Input 1.
  2. Check the condition the device guards, such as the condensate level or equipment status.
  3. Test the device contact and its wiring with a meter.
  4. Verify the input is configured as External Alarm with the right polarity.
  5. Repair the underlying condition or replace the device after testing.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The device may guard a condition tied to the refrigeration system, such as a safety switch.
  • Contacts and wiring are tested with a meter near live control voltage.
  • The input's configuration must match the installation and needs setup data.

How error code EA1 differs from similar codes

EA2 and EA3 are the same kind of alarm on the second and third external alarm inputs, each guarding a different device.

EA1Questions about Nor-Lake error code EA1
Does EA1 mean the controller is broken?

No. It reports that an outside device tripped.

How do I know what EA1 is watching?

It depends on the installation. We trace the wire to the device.

Can I ignore EA1 if the box is cold?

Not safely. The device may be guarding something that has not yet affected temperature.
