Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Codes: Classe 9 Numbering Differs

On a Rancilio Classe 9 USB, the same error descriptions as the Classe 11 appear under different code numbers. Look the number on your display up in the Classe 9 List of errors (Model USB), not the Classe 11 list. The two editions of the Classe 9 manual also differ, so check which edition you have.

Low: this is a reference note on numbering, not a problem with the machine.

What does Rancilio error code E00-E19 / W01-W04 mean?

The Classe 9 USB manual prints the same set of error descriptions as the Classe 11, such as CPU diagnosis, time out for boiler filling and time out for boiler pressure, but the numbers are not the same. In the 2021 edition of the Classe 9 list, CPU diagnosis is E00, the boiler filling time-out is E04 and the boiler pressure time-out is E08. On a Classe 11, the filling and pressure time-outs are E01 and E02. The 24 V short-circuit entries are also placed differently: in the 2021 edition they sit at E10, E14 and E18, and in the earlier 2011 edition at E09, E13 and E17. The practical rule is to match the number on the display to the list for the right model and edition before acting on it. A number matched against the wrong list can send you looking for water when the cause is electrical, or the other way around.

Affected models and control systems

Rancilio Classe 9 USB. This page uses the 2021 edition of the List of errors (Model USB); the earlier 2011 edition spaces some numbers differently, so check the edition printed in your manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • An error number on a Classe 9 display that does not match a Classe 11 page
  • Two lists giving different meanings for the same number
  • Confusion between water, pressure and electrical codes
  • Different numbers in different manual editions

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E00-E19 / W01-W04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Classe 11 list used for a Classe 9 machine
  • Older 2011 manual used with a newer machine

  • Machine model mixed up with another Classe model

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the model name on the machine's nameplate.
  2. Find the List of errors (Model USB) in the Classe 9 manual, not the Classe 11 list.
  3. Check the edition number at the bottom of the manual page.
  4. Match the number on the display to that list before acting.
  5. When you call for service, give the model, the manual edition and the number as shown.

How a technician diagnoses error code E00-E19 / W01-W04

  1. Confirm the model and the control software version.
  2. Identify the edition of the manual in use.
  3. Look up the displayed number in the list for that model and edition.
  4. Read the error history, since descriptions in the log follow the same numbering.
  5. Work through the checks for the real meaning, not the number's meaning on another model.
  6. Record the model, edition and number on the service ticket.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Acting on the wrong meaning can send a repair to the wrong circuit, such as the boiler water path instead of an electrical supply.
  • Several of the codes involve live control circuits and the pressurized boiler, which are technician work.
  • The full Classe 9 table has to be checked against the machine's own page, since the two editions do not agree.

How error code E00-E19 / W01-W04 differs from similar codes
