Rancilio Espresso Machine Warning W02: No Flowmeter Signal, Group 2
W02 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads No signal from flowmeter group 2: the control receives no flowmeter signal from group 2. The manual gives no operator remedy, so contact a Rancilio service technician. Other groups should dose normally.
Medium: one group cannot dose by volume, while the rest of the machine works.

What does Rancilio error code W02 mean?
The flowmeter on group 2 tells the control how much water has gone through, so the control can end the shot at the programmed volume. When group 2 runs and no pulses reach the control, it records W02 No signal from flowmeter group 2. Without the count, group 2 cannot finish a measured shot properly. It may keep running or stop at the wrong moment, while the other groups carry on normally, so the shots on those groups stay consistent. The causes are the same kind as for any flowmeter: scale that stops the turbine, a cable or connector that has worked loose, or water that is not flowing at all because of a blocked line. The manual lists the warning without an operator step, so a technician has to measure the signal.
Affected models and control systems
Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius machines from Rancilio; the code is taken from the List of errors in the user manual dated 07/2014.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- W02 on the display
- Group 2 shots too long, too short or not ending
- Group 2 volume off while other groups are fine
- No pulses counted on group 2
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code W02 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Group 2 flowmeter turbine fouled by scale
- Connector loose at the group 2 flowmeter
- Water path to group 2 partly blocked
- Cable damaged by heat near the group
Safe checks before calling for service
- Run a manual shot on group 2 and watch whether water flows.
- Look for wet connectors or leaks under group 2.
- Use the other groups for now.
- Do not unplug parts while the machine is powered.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and describe how group 2 behaves compared with the others.
How a technician diagnoses error code W02
- Read W02 and the error history.
- Check water flow through group 2 during a manual shot.
- Inspect the flowmeter connector and cable.
- Clean or test the flowmeter for scale.
- Measure the flowmeter signal at the board.
- Replace the flowmeter or cable and calibrate the dose.
- Measuring a signal at the board is done with the machine open, close to line-voltage parts.
- Recalibrating dosing uses the machine's own settings.
- A blocked water path means taking the group apart.
How error code W02 differs from similar codes
W01 and W03 are the same warning for groups 1 and 3.

Does W02 affect the other groups?
No. It names group 2, and the other groups should keep dosing.
Why do shots run on?
The control counts flowmeter pulses to end a shot. With no pulses, it cannot tell when the volume is reached.
Is W02 an electrical short?
No. A short would show as E16.
