Speed Queen CHM1792C Washer Error Code E SudS: Suds Lock
E SudS on a CHM1792C washer-extractor means foam was still in the drum after all the programmed suds routines, so the cycle stopped. Open the door or press a key to clear it, rinse the load, and use less detergent next time.
Low: it usually comes from detergent dosing, and a rinse and a smaller dose clear it.

What does Speed Queen error code E SudS mean?
Foam in a washer-extractor is more than a nuisance. A drum with suds in it cannot be spun safely, and the foam can interfere with the level sensing the control relies on. The CHM1792C runs its programmed suds routines, and after all of them it checks again. If foam is still present, the control stops the cycle rather than spin a load with foam in it and shows E SudS. Too much detergent is the usual cause. The amount and type of detergent, the water hardness and temperature, the rinse steps in the program, and the level sensing during suds detection all play a part. Opening the door or pressing any keypad clears the code, but the cycle needs a rinse to remove the suds first. Hard water with cold temperatures tends to leave more residue, while soft water suds easily, which is why dosing has to follow the local supply and not the label.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the CHM1792C family washer-extractor front-end control, the QN models from 20 to 100 pounds. Other Speed Queen controls do not use the same suds lock.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Foam showing in the drum or at the door glass
- The cycle stops before the spin
- E SudS appears with a sudsy load
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Detergent amount and type
- Water hardness and temperature
- Rinse steps in the program
- Level sensing during suds detection
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SudS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A detergent measured for a different washer size, so every load receives too much
- Residue left from a previous overdosed load that reappears as foam
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press any keypad or open the door to clear the code, as the owner's manual says.
- Open the door only once its lock has released.
- Rinse the load, and use less detergent next time.
- If E SudS comes back with a normal amount of detergent, note the brand, dose and load size, and schedule service with us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SudS
- Read the code and ask about detergent type, dose and recent changes.
- Check water hardness and temperature at the supply.
- Review the rinse steps and suds routines in the formula.
- Check the level sensing during suds detection, including tubing and wiring.
- Adjust the dosing or formula, and repair the sensing only if it tests bad.
- Foam can mislead the level sensor, and testing it means working with the machine energized.
- Changing rinse steps and suds routines is service-menu programming with the machine's own data.
- A spin with foam in the drum can overflow the cabinet onto the floor.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Is E SudS a machine failure?
Usually not. It most often means too much detergent for the load and water.
Can I just clear it and spin?
The cycle needs a rinse to remove the suds first.
What if it keeps happening with the right dose?
Then the level sensing during suds detection or the formula needs checking.
