Speed Queen CHM495R Washer Error Code Ed05: IGBT Overcurrent
Ed05 on a Design 2 or 3 CHM495R washer-extractor is an IGBT overcurrent error: the drive's power switches saw a shunt overcurrent condition and stopped the motor. Power down for at least two minutes, then call us if the code returns.
High: a possible short stops the motor, and repeated restarts can damage the drive.

What does Speed Queen error code Ed05 mean?
The motor drive uses power switches called IGBTs to shape the current that goes to the motor. The drive watches that current, and when it sees a shunt overcurrent condition it stops the motor at once, which is what Ed05 reports. The wet load stays in the drum until the machine is cleared. The owner's manual says to power down for a minimum of two minutes and check that the motor is not shorted. Three causes are on its list: a motor winding that has shorted, motor leads that are pinched or touching metal, and a drive board whose power switches have failed. The two-minute wait gives the drive time to settle before the machine is restarted. The code appears on Design 2 and 3 models only. A repeat means the short is still there.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Design 2 and Design 3 machines of the CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control. Ed08 is the related maximum overcurrent code on the same drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The motor stops suddenly during the start or spin
- Ed05 shows with a wet load inside
- The cycle will not resume until power is cycled
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A motor winding that has shorted
- Motor leads that are pinched or touching metal
- A drive board whose power switches have failed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Motor leads rubbed through their insulation where they pass the motor frame
- Moisture that reached the motor terminals and created a path to ground
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power down the machine and keep it off for at least two minutes, as the owner's manual says.
- Wait out the door lock; the door opens when it releases.
- Keep hands off the drum while the machine has power.
- If the code returns, write down when in the cycle it appeared, and ask us for service.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed05
- Read the code and confirm the machine is a Design 2 or 3.
- With power off and the drive discharged, test the motor windings for shorts and leakage to ground.
- Inspect the motor leads for pinches, burns and contact with metal.
- Check the drive output for signs of failed power switches.
- Replace the motor or drive board only after the winding and wiring tests.
- The drive carries high voltage, and testing the motor leads needs lockout and discharge procedures.
- A shorted motor winding can destroy a drive if the machine is restarted again and again.
- Insulation and winding tests need a megohm meter and a motor connection diagram.
How error code Ed05 differs from similar codes
Ed08 is the maximum overcurrent code, which can come from a dragging drum, while Ed05 points at a shorted motor or failed switches.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Why wait two minutes?
The manual calls for a minimum of two minutes with power off before the machine is started again.
Is a repeating Ed05 dangerous?
Restarting a shorted motor can damage the drive, so stop and call us.
Is Ed05 the same as Ed08?
No. Ed05 is a shunt overcurrent in the power switches; Ed08 is the motor reaching the highest current the drive allows.
