UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E bELt: Broken Belt
E bELt on a UniMac QN washer-extractor means the control thinks the drive belt has broken. Stay clear of the door, switch the machine off and let the drum come to a full stop. Leave the washer off and call us.
High: the basket may still be moving behind a door that can release, so the machine must not be used until checked.
What does UniMac error code E bELt mean?
The control cannot see a belt directly, so it infers a broken one from how the door behaves. During a cycle the door lock holds the door shut while the basket spins. When rotation ends, the control expects the door to stay locked until the basket has coasted to a stop. If the door unlocks right after rotation ends, the control reads that as a sign the drive belt has broken and the basket is no longer being driven. It then shows E bELt and halts the cycle. The basket may still be moving, and the door may release when it should not, so keep clear. Besides a broken belt, the cause can be a belt that has slipped or stretched, a motor and pulley that are out of line, a bad feedback signal about basket rotation, or a door unlock that happened at the wrong time.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to UniMac QN washer-extractors of 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCA020QN, in the CHM1792C family with the front-end control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E bELt on the display
- Drum no longer turning with the motor running
- Squealing or flapping noise before the stop
- Door releasing sooner than it normally would
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Drive belt condition and tension
- Motor and pulley alignment
- Sensor feedback of basket rotation
- Door unlock timing
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E bELt on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A belt glazed or frayed from a long period of overloaded spin cycles
- A pulley set screw that has loosened so the belt rides crooked
- A speed pickup that stopped reporting basket movement, which looks like a stopped drum
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the machine off and give the drum time to coast to a full stop.
- Do not open the door until the lock releases on its own.
- Never force the door.
- Keep people away from the front of the machine.
- Leave the washer off, note when the belt noise began, and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E bELt
- Confirm the drum is completely still, then lock out the washer before any panel is opened.
- Inspect the belt for breakage, glazing, cracks and tension.
- Check pulley alignment and set screws on the motor and basket sides.
- Verify the sensor that reports basket rotation and its wiring.
- Review the door unlock timing against the basket stopping.
- Replace the belt or adjust the drive, then run a spin to confirm.
- A moving basket behind a door that may release is a crush and entanglement hazard.
- Belt and pulley work happens in the drive area with heavy parts and high torque.
- Telling a broken belt from a failed rotation sensor needs inspection under lockout.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Can I open the door to look?
No. Wait for the lock to release on its own. The basket may still be moving.
Is E bELt only a belt problem?
Often, but the control infers it from the door and rotation signals, so a sensor problem can look the same.
Will restarting help?
If the belt really broke, no. The drum will not be driven and the code will return.
