UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E d 22: Over Motor Temperature

E d 22 on a UniMac QN washer-extractor means motor temperature rose past the drive's limit and the cycle was halted. Power the washer down to clear the code and let the motor cool. If E d 22 returns, call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the drive stops the cycle to protect the motor, but repeated trips point to a real cause.

What does UniMac error code E d 22 mean?

The drive keeps track of how hot the motor is. Motor temperature depends on how hard the motor works and how well it can shed heat. When the reading rises past the drive's limit, the drive halts the cycle so the motor windings are not damaged. That is E d 22. A drum that does not spin freely makes the motor work harder, as does an overloaded drum. Poor airflow around the motor, from a blocked vent or a warm room, keeps it from cooling. A damaged motor harness can also give a false temperature reading, so the drive trips even when the motor is not truly hot. A hot motor needs time to cool before the next try, and restarting immediately may just trip the code again. It is also worth knowing that heavy, wet loads such as bedding or towels can push the motor close to its limit.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to UniMac QN washer-extractors of 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCA020QN, in the CHM1792C family with the front-end control and motor drive.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E d 22 on the display
  • Washer stopping during a heavy extract
  • Motor casing too hot to hold a hand near
  • Code returning soon after a restart

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • A drum or bearings dragging, which overheats the motor under load
  • An overloaded drum forcing the motor to work too hard
  • Poor airflow around the motor from a blocked vent or warm room
  • A damaged motor harness giving a false temperature reading

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 22 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A cooling vent or fan screen covered with lint and dust
  • Worn bearings that make the drum stiff only when warm
  • A temperature sensor wire in the motor lead that has chafed and reads high

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down to clear the code and let the motor cool.
  2. With the power off and the drum still, see that the empty drum turns freely by hand, without forcing it.
  3. Do not overload the next cycle.
  4. Make sure vents around the machine are clear of lint.
  5. If E d 22 returns, note the load type and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E d 22

  1. Ask about load sizes and how soon after a stop the code returned.
  2. With power locked out, check that the drum and bearings turn freely.
  3. Inspect the motor's cooling path and vents for blockage.
  4. Measure the motor winding resistance and the temperature sensor circuit.
  5. Examine the motor harness for chafing or damage that could mislead the reading.
  6. Replace bearings, harness or motor only after the cause is shown.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Bearing and motor work involves heavy parts and live wiring.
  • A false temperature reading can only be proven by measuring the sensor circuit, not by guessing.
  • Repeatedly restarting an overheating motor can burn the windings.

How error code E d 22 differs from similar codes

E d 22 concerns the motor's temperature, whereas E d 25 concerns the drive's own power module.

E d 22Questions about UniMac error code E d 22
How long should the motor cool?

Long enough that it no longer feels hot to the touch. A quick restart often trips it again.

Can I run smaller loads?

Lighter loads reduce the work and can help, but if the code returns the cause needs checking.

Is E d 22 the same as E d 25?

No. E d 22 is motor heat. E d 25 is heat in the drive's power module.
