UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E bS: I/O Board Short

E bS on a UniMac QN washer-extractor means the input and output board is shorted. The control stops to protect itself. Disconnect power and reconnect it, look for water near the cabinet without touching wiring, and call us if E bS returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: an electrical short on the I/O board is a safety matter, and the machine stops until it is found.

What does UniMac error code E bS mean?

The input and output board is where the control switches the valves and the door lock. The control watches that board for a short circuit. When it detects one, it stops the cycle at once, because a short can overheat wiring and damage the board. E bS means that short was found. A wet connection, a damaged wire touching metal, a coil that has shorted inside, or a failed part on the board can each cause it. Clearing the display by cycling power may let the machine start again, but if the short is real it will come back, and each repeat stresses the board. We treat this code carefully because it involves electrical safety. Do not check wiring yourself. Keep water away from the cabinet and floor around the machine.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to UniMac QN washer-extractors of 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCA020QN, in the CHM1792C family with the front-end control and its input and output board.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E bS on the display
  • Machine stopping with a cycle half done
  • Valves or door lock not responding after restart

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Moisture near the board or cabinet
  • Damaged wiring touching metal
  • Valve or lock coil with a short
  • I/O board condition

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E bS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A hose or valve seep that has been dripping onto the board area
  • A coil on a fill or drain valve that has shorted internally
  • A wire pinched during a past repair so it chafes through the insulation

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Disconnect power to the machine and reconnect it.
  2. Look at the floor and the machine for water or leaks, without touching wiring.
  3. If you see water near the cabinet, keep the power off.
  4. Do not open the cabinet.
  5. If E bS returns, note what the machine was doing at the time and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E bS

  1. Confirm the code and ask what the machine was doing when it appeared, then lock out power.
  2. Look for moisture, corrosion or burn marks around the I/O board and connectors.
  3. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing against metal.
  4. Measure each valve and lock coil resistance and test it against ground.
  5. Reconnect parts one at a time to find which load causes the short.
  6. Replace the failed coil, wire or board only after it fails a test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Tracing a short means measuring live 208 to 240 V wiring and coils behind the panels.
  • Water near a shorted board is a shock hazard.
  • Finding which coil or wire is shorted takes isolated testing, not repeated restarts.

E bSQuestions about UniMac error code E bS
Can I keep restarting it?

No. If the short is real, every restart stresses the board and wiring.

Is E bS a leak sensor?

No. It means the board detected an electrical short. A leak can be the reason, but the code is about the short.

What if the floor is wet?

Keep the power off and keep clear. Call us so the source can be found.
