UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E d 21: Over Voltage DC Bus
E d 21 on a UniMac QN washer-extractor is an over voltage DC bus error: the voltage that powers the motor inside the drive went above its limit. Switch the washer off at its power control to clear the code. If it comes back, have the supply voltage checked.
Medium: the cycle stops and the code stays until power is cycled, but the drive is protecting itself.
What does UniMac error code E d 21 mean?
Inside the motor drive, incoming AC power is turned into a steady DC voltage, called the DC bus, which is then shaped into the signal that spins the motor. The drive continuously measures that bus voltage. If it rises above the safe limit, the drive stops the cycle to protect its own parts. E d 21 is that over voltage stop. Three things can push the bus too high. The line voltage at the washer may be higher than it should be. A surge or spike on the supply lines can briefly push it over the limit. And a motor can send energy back into the drive while it brakes from spin, which raises the bus if the drive cannot absorb it. A code that appears only as the spin starts or ends suggests the braking case. A code that appears at random suggests the supply. If it keeps returning, the drive may need attention.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to UniMac QN washer-extractors of 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCA020QN, in the CHM1792C family with the front-end control and motor drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E d 21 on the display
- Cycle stopping during or just after a spin
- Code appearing on a few random starts
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- High line voltage at the washer raising the drive's DC bus
- A power surge or spike arriving on the supply lines
- A motor feeding energy back to the drive while braking from spin
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 21 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A utility transformer tap or a lightly loaded building circuit running above nominal voltage
- Other heavy equipment switching off on the same feed and sending a spike through
- A drive whose braking circuit no longer absorbs the energy from a heavy extract
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the washer off at its power control, and the code clears.
- Have the input voltage checked by a qualified person.
- Begin a cycle and note whether the code reappears as the spin starts.
- Keep the cabinet closed.
- If it returns only at the start of spin or keeps coming back, tell us when it appears and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E d 21
- Read the code and ask when in the cycle it occurs, at start, at spin or at random.
- Measure the supply voltage at the washer's disconnect, with the machine idle and while running.
- Look for a surge source on the same feed, such as large motors or a lightly loaded circuit.
- Inspect the drive's connections and cooling with power locked out.
- If the supply is good, check whether braking energy is the cause by timing the code to spin changes.
- Replace or repair the drive only after the supply and braking checks.
- Measuring supply voltage means working at a live 208 to 240 V disconnect.
- Distinguishing a supply problem from a drive problem needs a meter and logged readings.
- A drive that trips on a supply issue may fail again if the cause is not corrected.
How error code E d 21 differs from similar codes
E d 21 is over voltage on the DC bus, unlike E d 22 and E d 25, which are heat-related codes on the motor and power module.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Is E d 21 a power problem or a drive problem?
It can be either. We check the incoming voltage first because a high supply or surge is a common reason.
Will it clear by itself?
Powering the washer off clears the display. If the supply or the drive is the cause, it will return.
Why only at the start of spin?
That timing points to braking energy flowing back into the drive as the motor slows or changes speed.
