UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E d 21: Over Voltage DC Bus

E d 21 is an over voltage DC bus error on a UniMac QN washer-extractor. The drive stopped the cycle because the voltage that powers the motor rose above its limit. Switch off to clear it and have the supply voltage checked by a qualified person.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the drive stops the machine to protect itself, and a repeating code means the drive needs attention.

What does UniMac error code E d 21 mean?

Inside the drive of a UniMac QN washer-extractor such as the UCA020QN, incoming power is converted into a steady DC voltage, called the bus, from which the motor is fed. The drive measures that bus voltage all the time. E d 21 means the reading rose above the limit, and the drive stopped the cycle to protect its own electronics.

Several things raise the bus. High line voltage at the washer's power connection does it directly. A surge or spike on the supply can do it for an instant. A third cause is the motor itself: when a heavy drum is slowed from spin, the motor can push energy back into the drive, and the bus climbs. That is why the code may appear exactly as the spin starts or ends. A drive board that no longer controls its internal bus voltage can also be the reason.

Switching the machine off clears the display. A code that keeps returning means the drive may need attention, and the supply should be measured first.

Affected models and control systems

E d 21 is listed for the CHM1792C family, QN washer-extractors from 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control and drive board. The manual's example is the UCA020QN.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E d 21 and the cycle ends
  • The code appears as the spin begins or while the drum slows
  • Other equipment on the same circuit flickers or trips
  • The code returns on heavy loads more than light ones

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • High line voltage at the washer's power connection
  • A power surge or spike on the supply feeding the machine
  • A motor that pushes energy back into the drive while braking from spin
  • A drive board that no longer controls its internal bus voltage

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 21 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Large nearby motor or dryer switching on and off the same supply, creating spikes
  • Utility voltage running high late at night when building loads are low
  • Bus capacitors in the drive aged enough that they no longer hold the voltage steady

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off to clear the code, then have a qualified person check the input voltage.
  2. Begin a cycle and see whether the code reappears right as the spin starts.
  3. Keep the cabinet shut.
  4. If it returns only at the start of spin, or keeps coming back, note when it happens and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E d 21

  1. Read the code and note at which part of the cycle it appeared.
  2. Measure incoming line voltage at the washer's disconnect, with the machine running and idle.
  3. Run a spin with a normal load and observe the drive's behavior while braking.
  4. Inspect the drive board for swollen parts, dust and loose power connections.
  5. Replace the drive board only when the supply is clean and the code repeats.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Measuring line voltage means working on live 208 to 240 V supply connections.
  • Telling a surge on the building supply from a drive that cannot hold its bus needs recorded readings over time.
  • Drive boards hold stored charge after power is removed, so they should be opened only by trained people.

E d 21Questions about UniMac error code E d 21
Is E d 21 caused by my loads being too heavy?

Sometimes a heavy load contributes, since the motor feeds energy back when braking. But supply voltage is the first thing to check.

Will it clear by itself?

Switching off clears the display. If the voltage is the cause, the code returns whenever the supply is high again.

How is it different from E d 66?

E d 21 means the bus voltage is too high. E d 66 means the drive could not read the bus voltage at all.
