UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E d 44: Overcurrent Shunt Circuit

E d 44 is a hardware failure in the overcurrent shunt detection circuit of the drive on a UniMac QN washer-extractor. Switch off at the main power control and try once. If E d 44 returns, call us, since the drive board is the likely cause.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the drive cannot guard the motor reliably, so the machine stays stopped.

What does UniMac error code E d 44 mean?

The drive on a UniMac QN washer-extractor such as the UCA020QN has a shunt detection circuit whose job is to catch dangerous spikes of current. Every time the drive starts up, it checks that this circuit works. E d 44 means the circuit failed its own check. It does not say that current was too high. It says the drive can no longer be sure it would notice if current were too high.

With the drive unable to guard the motor reliably, the cycle is stopped. Switching off at the main power control resets the board, and the code may not return. If it does come back after a power-down, the drive board is the likely cause. Other things that can disturb the check are a loose connector on the drive board cable and poor quality incoming power. A board that keeps failing the check needs replacing.

This code should not be confused with E d 23, where the shunt did work and saw a real surge.

Affected models and control systems

E d 44 is listed for the CHM1792C family washer-extractors, the QN models from 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control and drive board; the manual's example model is the UCA020QN.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E d 44 and the cycle stops at start-up
  • The code appears again right after a restart
  • No motor movement at all
  • It may appear after a power dip or storm

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • A failure inside the shunt detection circuit on the drive board
  • A loose connector on the drive board cable
  • Poor quality incoming power that disturbs the drive's own safety check
  • A drive board that keeps failing the check and needs replacing

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 44 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Part on the drive board aged so the shunt reading is out of range
  • Ground connection to the drive loosened, adding noise to the check
  • Surge from a nearby storm that damaged the sensing circuit
  • Cable from drive to control corroded at the connector

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch off at the main power control, which resets the board.
  2. Wait a moment, power up and try once.
  3. Do not open the cabinet.
  4. If E d 44 returns, call us, since the maker points to the drive board.

How a technician diagnoses error code E d 44

  1. Read the code and confirm it appears at start-up before motor power.
  2. Check incoming supply voltage and the drive ground connection.
  3. Inspect the drive board cable and connectors.
  4. Power the drive with the motor disconnected to see whether it still fails the check.
  5. Replace the drive board when the check keeps failing with a clean supply.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drive board runs on 208 to 240 V supply and holds charge after power is off.
  • A failed internal check cannot be repaired in the field, only judged by tests.
  • Fitting the right replacement board needs the machine's model and configuration data.

How error code E d 44 differs from similar codes

E d 44 is a failure of the detection circuit itself, while E d 23 is a real current surge that the circuit caught.

E d 44Questions about UniMac error code E d 44
Does E d 44 mean too much current flowed?

No. It means the circuit that watches for too much current failed its own check.

Can I run the washer if it clears?

Cautiously, once. If it returns, the drive cannot protect the motor and the washer should stay off.

Could bad power cause this?

Yes, poor quality supply can disturb the check. A technician measures it before replacing the board.
