UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E dr: Drain Time Alarm
E dr means the water never dropped to the empty level within the programmed drain time on a UniMac QN, UC-series or UW washer-extractor. Power the machine off to clear it, look at the floor drain, and call us if it repeats.
Medium: the batch stops full of water, but the cause is often a drain line that is easy to check.

- CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb) / PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractor (UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125) front-end control / CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control
What does UniMac error code E dr mean?
E dr is the drain alarm on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. During a drain step the control starts a timer and watches the level sensor. Within the programmed drain time, 15 minutes on all three controls as shipped, the water has to fall to the empty level. If it does not, the control stops the batch and holds E dr on the display until power is cycled.
Slow floor drains, a sticky drain valve and a level sensor that misreads can each bring it on. The building drain line may be backed up, so the machine is draining correctly into a pipe that cannot take the water. The drain valve may be slow to open or stuck shut. The level sensor or its tube may never report empty even though the drum is dry. Lint or a stray item in the drain path can narrow the flow.
The first look is outside the machine: is the floor drain carrying water away, and is the drain hose free of kinks?
Affected models and control systems
E dr is listed for the CHM495R family washer-extractors (UC series, 20 to 100 lb), the PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125) and the CHM1792C family QN washer-extractors, all with the front-end control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The display shows E dr and the drum sits full of water
- Standing water at the floor drain
- Gurgling or slow draining before the code
- The batch stops after a long drain
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- A backed-up floor drain or building drain line
- A drain valve that is slow to open or sticks shut
- A level sensor or its tube that never reports empty
- Lint or a stray item in the drain path
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E dr on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Grease and lint buildup in a shared laundry drain line
- Drain valve diaphragm worn so it opens only partly
- Level sensor tube kinked or filled with water so empty is never read
- Drain hose crushed behind the machine after it was moved
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the machine off to clear the code. On a QN machine, disconnect and reconnect power.
- Look at the floor drain for standing water.
- Look behind the machine for a crushed drain hose.
- Start a short drain and watch whether the drum empties. A repeat means call us, with a note of how long the drum took.
How a technician diagnoses error code E dr
- Read the code and ask whether other machines drain into the same line.
- Check the building drain and the drain hose for restrictions.
- Watch the drain valve open during a drain step.
- Check the level sensor tube and sensor reading at empty.
- Replace the valve or sensor, or clear the line, as the tests show.
- The drain valve and level sensor sit behind panels near live wiring.
- A restricted building drain may be a plumbing job as well.
- Reading the level sensor against the real water level needs tests that are not safe to improvise.
How error code E dr differs from similar codes
E dr is the alarm after the full drain time, while E Sd is the earlier warning that draining took longer than average.

Is it my floor drain?
Often. Check for standing water first, since the machine may be draining correctly into a blocked pipe.
How long does the machine wait?
15 minutes on all three controls, as shipped.
Does E Sd come before it?
Yes. E Sd is the slow drain warning, and a repeat of it is worth acting on before E dr appears.
