UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E FL: Fill Time Exceeded

E FL means a UniMac QN, UC-series or UW washer-extractor never reached its programmed water level. Clear the code with a power cycle, check that both supply valves are fully open, and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the batch stops with linens inside, but the cause is often a valve or supply that is easy to check.

CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb) / PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractor (UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125) front-end control / CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control

What does UniMac error code E FL mean?

In an on-premise or industrial laundry, E FL tells you that a UniMac washer-extractor never reached its programmed water level. It appears on QN machines such as the UCA020QN, on UC-series machines such as the UCH020GNF and on UW pocket hardmount machines such as the UWL035K12. The control starts a timer when it opens the fill valves and watches the level sensor. The QN control gives up after 30 minutes and the other two after 10. The batch stops with E FL showing, and linens sit in the drum until someone responds.

Water has to arrive in volume. Supply valves and the building pressure behind them are the first suspects. Inlet screens clogged with scale or grit can starve the fill. The fill valve coils and diaphragms may not open fully. The level sensor and its tube may also fail to report the true level, so the control keeps waiting.

On a QN machine, disconnect power and reconnect it to clear the code.

Affected models and control systems

E FL is listed for the CHM495R family washer-extractors (UC series, 20 to 100 lb), the PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125) and the CHM1792C family QN washer-extractors, all with the front-end control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E FL with the drum partly filled
  • Water enters slowly or not at all
  • Hoses hammer or hiss at the valves
  • The batch stops after a long fill

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Supply valves and the building pressure behind them
  • Inlet screens clogged with scale or grit
  • Fill valve coils and diaphragms
  • Level sensor and its tube

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Another machine drawing the shared hot water line at the same time
  • Scale in hard water packing the valve inlet screens
  • Diaphragm worn so the valve opens only partly
  • Pressure sensor tube kinked so the level never registers

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Clear the code by powering the machine off, as the maker's operator step says. On a QN machine, disconnect power and reconnect it.
  2. Confirm both supply valves are fully open and nobody closed one during a plumbing job.
  3. Glance at the hoses for kinks.
  4. Start a short rinse and watch for water entering. A second E FL means we should take a look.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FL

  1. Read the code and note the machine control family.
  2. Measure supply pressure and flow at the hose connections.
  3. Remove and inspect the inlet screens for scale.
  4. Test each fill valve coil and watch its diaphragm open.
  5. Check the level sensor reading as the drum fills.
  6. Replace the valve or sensor only after the water supply proves good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Valve coils are mains-powered and sit behind the panels.
  • Taking hoses and screens off under pressure can soak the machine electrics.
  • Separating a supply problem from a sensor problem needs measured pressure and level.

How error code E FL differs from similar codes

The fill time limit differs by control: 30 minutes on QN machines and 10 minutes on UC and UW machines.

E FLQuestions about UniMac error code E FL
Why do QN and UC machines wait for different times?

The control families have different limits, 30 minutes on QN and 10 on UC and UW.

Is the problem my building water?

It may be. Closed valves, low pressure and clogged screens are common, so check the valves first.

Is E FL the same as E nFLo?

No. E nFLo is the QN check that notices no water flow within 5 minutes, long before the fill timer would end.
