What does UniMac error code E FS mean?

E FS is the frame balance switch error on UniMac UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. A frame balance switch warns the control when the machine is shaking too hard during extract. Normally it stays closed. The control sees the frame balance switch open, and treats that as a sign the load is badly out of balance. On UC machines the batch stops until power is cycled.

The code follows a badly uneven load, or a switch or wiring problem that makes the switch look open when it should not. A frame balance switch out of adjustment or loose on its mount is the first thing to rule out. A broken wire or damaged connector on the switch gives the same reading. A heavy or lopsided load can trip the switch for real. Worn suspension that lets the frame shake can also open it.

The operator step is to switch the machine off. Open the door only after the drum has stopped and the lock has released.

Affected models and control systems

E FS is listed for the CHM495R family washer-extractors (UC series) and the PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125), with the front-end control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E FS during or right after the extract
  • The washer shakes or walks before stopping
  • Linens bunched on one side of the drum
  • The code repeats on ordinary loads

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • A frame balance switch out of adjustment or loose on its mount
  • A broken wire or damaged connector on the switch
  • A heavy or lopsided load that tripped the switch
  • Worn suspension letting the frame shake

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Single heavy item such as a rug wrapped with light towels
  • Switch bracket bent after the washer was bumped
  • Suspension spring or damper tired from years of spin
  • Mounting bolts at the floor loosened by vibration

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Clear the code by switching the machine off, which is the operator step.
  2. Open the door only after the drum has stopped and the lock has released.
  3. Spread the load evenly and avoid pairing a few heavy pieces with light ones.
  4. Start the cycle again. If E FS returns on a normal load, call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FS

  1. Read the code and ask about the load that was running.
  2. Lock out the machine and inspect the switch, its mount and its wiring.
  3. Check the suspension and floor bolts for wear and looseness.
  4. Test the switch open and closed with a meter.
  5. Adjust, repair or replace the switch or suspension according to the result.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The frame switch guards against destructive vibration, so its setting matters.
  • Suspension work on a heavy machine needs support and tools.
  • Switch wiring runs near live high-voltage circuits.

How error code E FS differs from similar codes

E FS is the frame balance switch open, while E db is the drive balance switch closed too early.

E FSQuestions about UniMac error code E FS
Was my load too uneven?

It could be. Redistribute the pieces and try again. If it trips on a balanced load, something is wrong with the switch or frame.

Will it clear by itself?

The display clears with a power cycle, but a loose switch or tired suspension will bring it back.

Is E FS the same as E db?

No. They are two different balance switches, one on the frame and one at the drive.
