What does UniMac error code E SP mean?

E SP is a communication error on UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF and on UW pocket hardmount machines such as the UWL035K12. The master control has lost its conversation with the motor control or output board, so it cannot command the drum. The batch is interrupted and the code stays on the display.

For UC machines the usual culprits are an unplugged transformer and wrong wiring at the motor control. On pocket hardmount machines the link goes to the output board, so its connection matters. The cabling from the master control to the motor control can fail. The control boards themselves come last, once the link has been proven good.

Power the washer down, then power it up and try the cycle again, as the operator instructions say. Be sure the door is shut and the drum has stopped before anyone leans on the washer. Leave the control cabinet closed. If E SP is back immediately, tag the washer out of service and call us.

Affected models and control systems

E SP is listed for the CHM495R family UC-series washer-extractors and the PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125), with the front-end control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E SP and the batch is interrupted
  • The drum cannot be commanded
  • The code returns right after power-up
  • Keys respond but nothing happens

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Transformer connector and mounting
  • Cabling from the master control to the motor control
  • Output board connection on pocket hardmount machines
  • Control boards, once the link has been proven good

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Transformer plug worked loose by cabinet vibration
  • Motor control wiring crossed after earlier repair
  • Output board connector oxidized
  • Cable shield broken so noise corrupts the link

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the washer down, then power it up and try the cycle again, as the operator instructions say.
  2. Be sure the door is shut and the drum has stopped before anyone leans on the washer.
  3. Leave the control cabinet closed.
  4. If E SP is back immediately, tag the washer out of service and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E SP

  1. Read the code and note whether it returns at once or after a cycle begins.
  2. Lock out the machine and check the transformer connector and mounting.
  3. Check the cabling from the master control to the motor control.
  4. On pocket hardmount machines, check the output board connection.
  5. Test the link, then replace the board only once the link proves good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The transformer and motor control wiring sit in the cabinet at mains-level voltage.
  • Wrong wiring at the motor control can damage the drive.
  • Proving the link good takes methodical continuity and supply tests.
