UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E SudS: Suds Lock

E SudS means foam was still in the drum after every programmed suds routine, so the control holds the cycle instead of spinning. Open the door or press any key to clear the display, then use less detergent in the next load.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the control stops one cycle to protect the batch, and the display clears with a door open or key press.

What does UniMac error code E SudS mean?

The control on a UniMac QN washer-extractor watches the wash for foam. After draining and filling, it runs the suds routines you programmed, which are extra rinse and drain passes meant to knock the foam down. If suds are still present when the last routine ends, the control decides that spinning is unsafe, because a drum full of foam spins unevenly, strains the motor and can push suds out of the machine. Rather than extract, it stops the cycle and shows E SudS on the display. Opening the door or pressing any key clears the message, and the load can then be rinsed again. The most common reason is simply more detergent than the load needed, or a type of detergent that foams heavily in a given water supply. If foam keeps appearing after a normal dose, the rinse water supply or the level sensor reading is worth examining.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers the CHM1792C family of UniMac QN washer-extractors, the 20 to 100 lb front-end control, such as the UCA020QN. The message is part of the table of error codes in that programming manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E SudS on the display and the cycle paused before extract
  • Visible foam in the drum or at the door glass
  • Linens that come out of the wash still soapy
  • The machine waiting for a key press or door open

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Detergent amount and type
  • Load size and soil
  • Rinse water supply
  • Level sensor reading

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SudS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A detergent dosing pump or scoop that delivers more than the label rate for this load size
  • A washer fed from a soft-water tap, where the same dose foams far more than in hard water
  • A pressure-type level sensor that reads foam as water and shortens the rinse fill

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Clear the display by opening the door or pressing any key.
  2. Re-rinse the batch if the linens still feel soapy, and use less detergent in the next load.
  3. Make sure the rinse water supply valves to the washer are fully open.
  4. If E SudS shows up again after a normal dose, write down the detergent brand, the dose and the load weight for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code E SudS

  1. Ask what detergent, dose and load weight were used on the cycles that stopped, and compare with the maker's label rate.
  2. Confirm hot and cold water pressure at the machine and that the rinse fill reaches the programmed level.
  3. Check the level sensor reading with the drum empty and again at a known fill, and look at its tubing for water or soap film.
  4. Review the programmed suds routines in the cycle for rinse counts and levels.
  5. Replace the level sensor only if its reading disagrees with the actual water height.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Level sensor and pressure tubing readings must be checked against real water height, which needs the machine filled and the service menu in hand.
  • Programmed suds routines are part of the cycle data, and changing them without the maker's guidance can cause overflow.
  • Rinse water valves and the drain path sit behind panels where supply and mains-voltage wiring are present.

E SudSQuestions about UniMac error code E SudS
What does suds lock mean?

The control found foam it could not rinse away after all programmed suds routines, so it stops before extract to keep the foam from overflowing.

Will less detergent fix it?

Often it does, especially when the dose was heavy. If foam returns after a correct dose, the sensor or water supply needs a look.

Can I just keep running loads?

You can run another load after clearing the display, as long as you lower the soap. Repeated stops on normal doses should be checked.
