UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed01: Drive Communication

Ed01 means the front-end control and the motor drive cannot communicate, so no commands reach the motor and the drum stays still. Power down, confirm the breaker and disconnect from outside the cabinet, then call us if Ed01 returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the motor drive cannot be commanded, so the washer will not run until the link is restored.

What does UniMac error code Ed01 mean?

A UniMac UC-series washer-extractor with a motor drive uses two electronics: the front-end control, which runs the cycle, and the drive, which turns the motor. They talk to each other over a serial link carried on a 6-pin connection. When a batch starts, the control sends speed and direction commands, and the drive answers with its status. If the control gets no answer, it cannot know whether the motor is turning, so it stops the cycle and shows Ed01. With no conversation there are no commands to the motor, which is why the drum stays still rather than creeping along. The message applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. The first things to rule out are input power to the drive and the 6-pin connection between the two boards. A drive that lost power looks exactly like a drive that stopped answering. Connector wear and wiring can interrupt the link without any visible sign, and the board condition of either side is the last possibility. From the operator side, the useful steps are power-related and external.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the motor drive, for example the UCH020GNF. Only Design 2 and 3 models report Ed01.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed01 on the display and the cycle halted
  • Drum that will not turn at all
  • Control lit but no motor sound at start
  • Cycle that stops in the first seconds

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Input power reaching the drive
  • The six-pin plug between control and drive
  • Connector wear and wiring
  • Drive and control board condition

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A drive supply fuse or branch breaker that tripped and left the control powered but the drive dead
  • A communication cable pinched or worn where it flexes near the hinge or frame
  • A drive that locked up after a power surge and needs a full power cycle

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down at its control.
  2. From outside the cabinet, confirm the breaker is on and the disconnect is closed.
  3. Do not open the cabinet to reseat plugs yourself.
  4. Power up and try once more. If Ed01 returns, note whether any other lights or messages appeared, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed01

  1. Read the code and check whether other Ed codes are stored with it.
  2. Verify incoming line voltage at the disconnect and at the drive input terminals.
  3. Check the drive for its own status indication and for supply to the logic side.
  4. Inspect the 6-pin communication plug and wiring for corrosion, bent pins or damage, and meter the link continuity.
  5. Swap or replace the drive or control only after power and wiring are proven.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Verifying voltage at the drive means working with live line-voltage terminals behind the panels.
  • The 6-pin link carries data between two boards, and reseating or testing it without the right grounding can damage the electronics.
  • Telling a dead drive from a broken link needs a meter and the maker's wiring reference.

Ed01Questions about UniMac error code Ed01
Does Ed01 mean the motor is bad?

Not necessarily. It means the control got no reply from the drive, so the cause may be power, the cable or either board.

Can I restart the washer?

You can try one power cycle from the outside. If the code comes back, stop using the machine.

Is Ed01 the same as Ed07?

No. Ed07 is a missing setup packet. Ed01 means the two electronics are not talking at all.
