UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed04: Locked Rotor
Ed04 is a locked rotor error: at startup the motor never got up to speed, so the drive ended the batch. Switch the machine off, check from the door that nothing is wedged near the drum, and call us if Ed04 returns.
High: the motor cannot turn the drum, and repeated attempts can overheat the motor or drive.

What does UniMac error code Ed04 mean?
When a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor starts a wash or spin, the drive supplies power to the motor and expects the drum to begin turning within a short period. If the motor never gets up to speed, current keeps flowing through a motor that is not moving, which heats the windings fast. To avoid that, the drive ends the batch instead of letting the motor strain against a drum that will not turn, and Ed04 shows. The manual points to four areas: motor mounting and drive coupling, obstructions near the basket, motor windings and wiring, and bearing drag on the drum. Something wedged between the drum and the shell is the simplest cause and the only one you can look for safely from the door. A mounting problem or a drag in the bearings is the next place we start. The message applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. A very heavy, wet or oversized load can add to the problem, but it does not explain a motor that never moves at all.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the motor drive, such as the UCH020GNF. Only Design 2 and 3 machines show Ed04.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ed04 on the display soon after a start
- Motor humming or buzzing while the drum stays still
- Drum that feels stiff or catches when turned by hand with power off
- Cycle ending before any water is extracted
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Motor mounting and drive coupling
- Obstructions near the basket
- Motor windings and wiring
- Bearing drag on the drum
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A coin, wire or hard object that slipped between the basket and the outer shell
- A drive belt or coupling that has slipped or sheared so the motor turns without moving the drum
- A bearing that has seized from water or lost lubrication and now binds the drum
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at its control.
- From the door only, make sure the drum is empty and nothing is wedged between the drum and the shell.
- Never force a heavy drum or reach in while the machine has power.
- Power up and try once. If Ed04 returns, note whether the motor hums and whether the drum turns freely by hand with power off.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed04
- Read the code and ask whether the drum was loaded and whether the motor made any sound.
- With power locked out, turn the drum by hand to feel for binding, rubbing or roughness in the bearings.
- Inspect the coupling, belt and motor mount for slippage or damage.
- Measure motor winding resistance and insulation, and check the motor leads for a short or open.
- Replace the bearing, coupling or motor only after the failed part is identified.
- Turning and inspecting the drum assembly means working near heavy moving parts that can cause serious injury.
- Meter tests on motor leads and windings need the line power locked out and the drive discharged.
- Bearing and coupling work involves heavy drums and torque specifications from the maker.

Could an overloaded drum cause Ed04?
A very heavy load can add drag, but a motor that never moves at all usually points to a wedged object, a coupling or a bearing.
Is it safe to try a second start?
One try after checking from the door is fine. Repeated starts against a locked drum can overheat the motor.
Is Ed04 the same as Ed08?
No. Ed08 is an overcurrent trip on the motor output. Ed04 is a motor that failed to turn.
