UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed06: Drive Thermal Error

Ed06 is a thermal error: the drive reported a high IPM temperature, so it stopped the batch to cool off. Power the machine down, let the drive cool, clear anything blocking airflow, and call us if Ed06 returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the batch stops until the drive cools, and repeated heat stress can shorten the drive's life.

What does UniMac error code Ed06 mean?

The motor drive of a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor uses an intelligent power module, or IPM, which switches heavy current to the motor and gets warm while doing it. A heat sink and the air around it carry that heat away. The drive reads the module temperature, and if it climbs past its limit, the drive stops the batch and shows Ed06 so the module is not damaged. Lint is a common problem in laundries because it settles on cabinet surfaces and vents and cuts airflow over the heat sink. A closed or poorly ventilated room has the same effect, and so does a clogged heat sink or a cooling fan that has stalled. That is why the maker's operator step is to check convection around the heat sink. The message applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. If a cool drive runs fine for a while and then trips again, airflow is the first thing to suspect. In a summer a closed laundry room can get hot enough to cause it on its own.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the motor drive, such as the UCH020GNF. Only Design 2 and 3 models show Ed06.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed06 on the display after a long run of batches
  • Warm air or a hot smell around the cabinet
  • The washer working after a rest and tripping again
  • Visible lint around vents and the base

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Poor air movement around the drive heat sink
  • Lint building up near the drive
  • A hot, poorly ventilated room
  • A clogged heat sink or a stalled cooling fan

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed06 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A laundry room whose make-up air or exhaust was reduced, so the room runs hotter than the washer expects
  • A drive cooling fan whose bearings are worn and which turns too slowly
  • Thermal paste between the module and heat sink that has dried and no longer carries heat

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down and give the drive time to cool.
  2. Clear anything restricting air around the machine and open up the laundry room if it is closed in.
  3. Wipe lint from the outside of the cabinet and from vents you can reach without removing panels.
  4. Power up. If Ed06 returns, note the room temperature, how long the washer ran and the cycle in progress.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed06

  1. Read the code and ask how many batches ran before the trip and what the room temperature was.
  2. Check the drive cooling fan for rotation and the heat sink for lint packing.
  3. Measure drive heat sink temperature during a run, using a contact or infrared thermometer.
  4. Verify that the module is seated against the heat sink with good contact.
  5. Replace the fan or drive only after temperature and airflow tests.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Cleaning and testing the heat sink means opening the drive area, where live line voltage and stored charge are present.
  • Measuring module temperature while the washer is running is only safe with the right tools and a clear understanding of the drive.
  • A fan, heat sink or drive replacement involves live-circuit work and electrostatic handling.

Ed06Questions about UniMac error code Ed06
Is a hot room enough to trigger it?

Yes. The drive sheds heat to the air around it, so a hot, closed room can cause Ed06 even when the machine itself is fine.

Will it clear once the drive cools?

Usually, but it will return if airflow stays poor.

Is Ed06 the same as Ed05?

No. Ed05 is an overcurrent trip. Ed06 is the module temperature going too high.
