UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed08: Max Overcurrent
Ed08 means the motor output of the drive went over its current limit, so the drive stopped the batch to protect itself and the motor. Power the machine down and up, try a lighter load, and call us if Ed08 returns.
High: the drive stops the batch at its current limit, and repeated trips risk the motor and drive.

What does UniMac error code Ed08 mean?
The drive on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor measures how much current it sends to the motor. A motor that works against a heavy drum draws more current, and the drive allows that only up to a fixed maximum. When the output goes past the limit, the drive cuts power at once, the batch stops and Ed08 is shown. The limit protects both the drive's output stage and the motor windings from heat. The maker's operator step is to power the machine down and up, which resets the drive. A drum that drags, a motor that is shorting, or a surge on the supply are the first possibilities to rule out. The manual lists motor and leads for a short or drag, drum and bearing resistance, supply voltage condition, and the drive output stage. The message applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. An oversized or tightly packed load can push current high enough on its own, which is why trying a lighter load afterward is a useful test.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the motor drive, for example the UCH020GNF. Only Design 2 and 3 models report Ed08.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ed08 on the display and the batch stopped
- Spin that cuts out as the drum accelerates
- Motor sound that changes just before the stop
- A heavy load stopping the machine where a light one does not
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Motor and leads for a short or drag
- Drum and bearing resistance
- Supply voltage condition
- Drive output stage
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed08 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A bearing or seal that has started to bind and makes the drum harder to turn
- A motor lead with worn insulation that leaks current at the point where it passes the frame
- Line voltage sagging under load, which makes the motor draw more current for the same torque
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the machine down and then up, which is the maker's operator step.
- Check whether the last load was oversized or packed tight.
- Start a lighter load and watch for the code.
- If Ed08 returns, stop using the washer and note the load weight and cycle step for the service call.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed08
- Read the code history and ask what load and cycle step were running.
- Measure line voltage at the disconnect, idle and under a running load.
- Lock out power and check the motor windings and leads for a short or insulation leakage.
- Turn the drum by hand to feel for bearing drag.
- Test the drive output only after motor and supply are cleared, and replace the drive last.
- Motor and drive tests involve 208 to 240 V circuits and stored charge in the drive.
- Bearing drag in a loaded drum has to be felt and measured with the machine locked out.
- Telling a drive output problem from a motor short takes a meter and insulation tester.

Is Ed08 caused by too much laundry?
It can be. A packed drum raises motor current. If a lighter load runs without the code, the load was a factor.
Why power the machine down and up?
It resets the drive after the current trip. It does not repair a short or a dragging drum.
How is this different from Ed05?
Ed05 is an IGBT overcurrent in the drive's power stage. Ed08 is the motor output exceeding its maximum current.
