UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code EI09: IR CRC-16 Error
EI09 is an infrared CRC-16 error: the data the control received failed its built-in check, so it was damaged in transit. Re-aim the tool, shade the window from bright light, and try again.
Low: damaged data on the programming link only; the wash systems are not involved.

What does UniMac error code EI09 mean?
Every block of data sent to a UniMac UW pocket hardmount washer-extractor carries a check number, called a CRC-16, calculated from its contents. The washer recalculates the number on arrival and compares it. If the two do not match, the data was damaged in transit, and the control rejects it with EI09. An unsteady aim, sunlight on the window and interference are the usual causes. The wash systems are not involved, and production cycles carry on as normal. The manual lists a tool held at a poor angle or distance, bright light on the infrared window, a smudged or dirty window, and a control receiver that corrupts data on repeat transfers. A short transfer, held steady with the window shaded by your hand or a card, often goes through. If the same message returns with different tools in different lighting, the receiver on the control deserves a look.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the PHM1263R family of UniMac UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors, models UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125, such as the UWL035K12. EI09 is an infrared data-integrity message on this control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- EI09 on the display at the end of a transfer
- A transfer that fails near a bright window
- Normal washing between attempts
- Success after shading the window
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- A tool held at a poor angle or distance during the transfer
- Bright light shining on the infrared window
- A smudged or dirty infrared window
- A control receiver that corrupts data on repeat transfers
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EI09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Sunlight through a nearby door or skylight at certain hours of the day
- Fluorescent or LED fixtures that flicker at a rate close to the infrared signal
- A tool battery that is low, so the transmitted pulses are weak and distorted
Safe checks before calling for service
- Re-aim the tool at the infrared window and transfer again.
- Shade the window from direct sunlight or bright overhead light.
- Wipe the window and hold the tool steady.
- If EI09 keeps returning, note the time of day and lighting, then call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code EI09
- Read the code and ask about the lighting and the time of day.
- Repeat the transfer with the window shaded and the tool close and steady.
- Clean the window and check the tool's battery.
- Try a second tool to see whether the corruption follows the tool.
- Test the receiver only after environmental causes are ruled out.
- Interference problems need a methodical test with another tool and different lighting.
- A receiver replacement involves live control boards and the machine's stored data.
- Reprogramming after a corrupted transfer needs the maker's procedure to confirm nothing was half-loaded.

What is CRC-16?
It is a check number sent with the data. If the washer's own calculation differs, the data was damaged.
Can sunlight really cause this?
Yes. Strong light on the infrared window can swamp the signal.
Does it affect washing?
No. Production cycles carry on as normal.
