UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Err: Coin Error

Err is the coin error: the coin pulse looked invalid to the control, or its coin sensor has stopped working. The machine will not accept a start until it can confirm payment. Clear any jammed coin you can see, power the machine off and on, and call us if Err stays.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: only the payment path is involved, and the wash circuits are untouched.

What does UniMac error code Err mean?

On a coin-operated UniMac UC-series washer-extractor, the control counts pulses from the coin drop to confirm that payment was made. Err is the coin error. Either the coin pulse looked invalid to the control, or its coin sensor has stopped working. Because the machine cannot confirm payment, it will not accept a start. This is a vending-input problem in the payment path, so the water, drain and drive circuits are normally untouched and linens already inside are not at risk. The manual lists the coin drop or coin sensor connection, the pulse wiring back to the control, a coin slide with a bent or jammed coin, and the control input that counts the pulse. A bent coin, a foreign object in the slide or a coin of the wrong size is the easiest cause to find and the only one an operator can look for. Remove any coin you can see without opening the cabinet. Then power the machine off and on, and try one clean coin or the normal payment method.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCH020GNF, in coin-operated form. Machines set up for card or free-vend operation do not use a coin pulse.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Err on the display when a coin is inserted
  • Machine refusing to start after payment
  • Coins dropping into the return without credit
  • Normal operation once payment is accepted

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Coin drop or coin sensor connection
  • Pulse wiring back to the control
  • Coin slide with a bent or jammed coin
  • Control input that counts the pulse

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Err on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A coin drop whose optical sensor is coated with lint, soap residue or dust
  • Foreign tokens or slugs that the sensor reads as an invalid pulse
  • Pulse wiring worn where the coin drop door opens and closes

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Remove any bent or jammed coin you can see in the slide, without opening the cabinet.
  2. Power the machine off and on, then try one clean coin or the normal payment method.
  3. Keep the control cabinet closed.
  4. When Err will not stay away, note whether the coin returns or sticks, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code Err

  1. Read the code and ask what payment type and coin were used.
  2. Inspect the coin slide and sensor for jams, dirt or damage.
  3. Check the pulse wiring and connectors from the coin drop to the control with power locked out.
  4. Test the pulse signal at the control input as a coin passes.
  5. Replace the coin drop or wiring first, and the control input only if it still miscounts.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Pulse wiring runs inside the cabinet near line-voltage parts and must be tested with power controlled.
  • Coin mechanisms need adjustment and cleaning with the proper tools.
  • Money-handling hardware is a vending service item with its own security.

ErrQuestions about UniMac error code Err
Is my laundry at risk?

No. The payment path is separate from water, drain and drive circuits, so linens already inside are fine.

Can I use a different coin?

Only the coin the machine is set for. A foreign token can cause Err.

Is Err the same as a card reader error?

No. Err is the coin pulse. A card system would show its own message.
