Speed Queen Washer Error Code EI03: Invalid Infra-Red Command

EI03 means the external device sent a command code that this Quantum washer's machine type or control mode does not accept. The infra-red link itself is working. Check that the device and file are set up for this washer type and try again, and call us if EI03 persists.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: it reports a refused programming command, and the washer keeps running.

What does Speed Queen error code EI03 mean?

The infra-red exchange on a Quantum washer works in commands: the external device sends a code that tells the control to do something, such as accept settings or send information. The control reads the code and checks that it fits this machine type and its current control mode. If the code is understood but does not apply, the control refuses it and shows EI03. That tells us the window and the aim are fine, since the message was heard and understood; the request is wrong for this washer. The manual's reasons are which device and program file is being sent to the washer, whether the file is meant for a frontload or a topload, and the control mode at the time of the exchange. The display shows the code during the exchange, and it is not a report of anything the wash cycle did. Using a file written for another washer type is the typical way to get it.

Affected models and control systems

Quantum frontload (FLW1535C family) and Quantum topload (TLW13C family) washers; a file written for one type is refused by the other.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EI03 appears as soon as the exchange starts
  • The device seems to connect, but the transfer is rejected
  • Normal cycles are unaffected

Possible causes

Listed in Speed Queen's documentation

  • Which device and program file is being sent to the washer
  • Whether the file is meant for a frontload or a topload
  • Control mode at the time of the exchange

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EI03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A file saved from a topload and then sent to a frontload washer in the same laundry
  • An older stored program that predates the control version now installed

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the external device is set for the type of washer in front of you, frontload or topload.
  2. Look at which program file you picked; a file made for another machine will be refused.
  3. Choose the correct setup and send the exchange again.
  4. If EI03 persists, phone us or use the online form and we will schedule a visit, and tell us the file name you used.

How a technician diagnoses error code EI03

  1. Read the code and ask which file and device were used.
  2. Confirm the washer model and the control version from the label.
  3. Check that the file is written for this machine type and control mode.
  4. Resend with the correct file and watch whether the control accepts it.
  5. Verify the control's mode before the exchange.
  6. Replace the control only if a correct file for the type is still refused.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Choosing and sending the right settings file is service-menu programming that relies on the machine's own data.
  • A wrong file written to the control can change how it behaves, including door and spin settings.
  • If the control itself is at issue, replacing it means working on live 208-240 V wiring.

How error code EI03 differs from similar codes

EI03 means a command the machine type or mode does not accept. EI0A on a topload reports an invalid machine type in the message.

EI03Questions about Speed Queen error code EI03
Is the infra-red window broken if I see EI03?

Probably not. The control heard and understood the message, which means the window and aim worked.

Can I use a frontload file on a topload?

No. The manual lists the frontload or topload type as a reason the exchange is refused.

Does EI03 stop the washer from washing?

No. The code is about the data link, not the cycle.
