Speed Queen MDC Washer Error Code EC:19: No Card Reader Link
EC:19 on an older MDC topload washer with a card reader means the control and the card reader have stopped talking. The payment step cannot finish, so the cycle does not start. Switch the washer's power off and on, try a card, and call us if the code stays.
Medium: customers cannot start a paid cycle, but the wash circuits are not affected.

What does Speed Queen error code EC:19 mean?
Older MDC-controlled topload washers that accept cards have two parts that must work together: the control and the card reader. When the control stops hearing from the reader, it cannot complete the payment step, so it shows EC:19 on the screen instead of the price or cycle choice. The cycle does not start. Water and drum circuits are not what the code describes, which is helpful, since the washer itself is probably fine. The usual causes are a broken or unplugged cable between the reader and the MDC control, a card reader that has lost its power feed, a reader with wrong settings or an internal failure, or an MDC control board that no longer answers the reader. These machines are older but still in service, and repairing them is routine for us. Because the reader is on the outside of the machine, a pulled cable or a knock to the housing is a realistic cause.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers MDC topload control washers with a card reader. Quantum washers report a similar loss of the reader link as EC19, without the colon.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The screen shows EC:19 instead of a price
- The washer will not start after a card is presented
- The wash and drum circuits sit idle
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A broken or unplugged cable between reader and MDC control
- A card reader that has lost its power feed
- A reader with wrong settings or internal failure
- An MDC control board that no longer answers the reader
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EC:19 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A reader cable pinched when the cabinet or console was moved
- Moisture inside the reader housing that interrupts its power at times
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look at the card reader and make sure nothing pulls on its cable.
- Switch the washer's power off, then on, and try a card.
- If EC:19 remains, put up an out-of-service sign.
- Book a visit and tell us it is an MDC machine.
How a technician diagnoses error code EC:19
- Read the code and confirm the MDC card reader configuration.
- Inspect the reader cable and connectors at both ends for damage and seating.
- Check that the reader has its supply voltage.
- Review the reader settings against the machine's setup.
- Test the control's reader port and replace the reader or the board only after it fails.
- The reader and control are wired to a power supply inside the cabinet, so checking them live is work for a trained technician.
- Reader settings are tied to the laundry's pricing setup and should be handled with the proper data.
- Telling a dead reader from a dead control port takes meter checks and known-good swaps.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Will the washer wash without the card?
Not on a card-only machine; the payment step must complete first.
Is the washer broken?
The wash circuits are not what the code describes, so the problem is probably the reader link.
Will a power cycle fix it?
It can, if the link only dropped briefly. If EC:19 stays, the cable, reader or board needs a look.
