Speed Queen CHM1792C Washer-Extractor Error Code E FL: Fill Level
E FL on a CHM1792C washer-extractor means the programmed fill level was not reached within 30 minutes. Make sure the hot and cold valves are fully open, then power down and restart. If E FL returns, send us a service request.
Medium: the fill step stops and the cycle does not complete until the level problem is solved.

What does Speed Queen error code E FL mean?
The CHM1792C control fills the drum until its level sensor reports the programmed water level. It allows 30 minutes for that to happen, and the manual notes that the fill timer can also be programmed off on these machines. If the level has not been reached when the time runs out, the control stops the fill step and shows E FL, and the cycle does not finish. The code points at water supply or level sensing, not at the drive or the door, so it narrows the search. A supply valve that is closed or only partly open, a kinked or collapsed hose, fill valves or inlet screens that are blocked, a level sensor that reads wrong, or a fill time setting that does not match the machine's size can each produce it. Because the washer-extractors move a large volume of water for loads up to 100 pounds, a modest drop in supply pressure can make a fill take much longer than the timer allows.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the CHM1792C family washer-extractor front-end control, the QN models from 20 to 100 pounds. The CHM495R has its own shorter timer.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The drum stops filling and the cycle will not finish
- The load sits unwashed in the drum
- E FL is on the display
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Supply valves and hose condition
- Fill valves and inlet screens
- Water level sensor and its reading
- Fill time setting in the program
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A building water heater or line that cannot keep up when several large machines call for water at once
- A level sensor hose that has filled with lint or detergent and reads low
Safe checks before calling for service
- Make sure the hot and cold water valves feeding the machine are fully open.
- Disconnect power, then reconnect it, as the owner's manual says.
- Wait for the lock to release before the door opens.
- When E FL returns, note how much water reached the drum and send us a service request.
How a technician diagnoses error code E FL
- Read the code and check the programmed fill level and fill time.
- Measure supply pressure and flow with the machine filling.
- Inspect fill valves and screens, then test the valve coils when commanded.
- Check the level sensor and its tubing for blockage, leaks or drift.
- Compare the sensor reading with the actual water level and replace only the failing part.
- The fill valves and level sensor are wired behind the panels on line voltage, and live testing needs a trained technician.
- The fill time and level settings sit in the machine's own program, and changing them without data can cause an overflow.
- Large washer-extractors hold a lot of water, and an uncontrolled test fill can flood the room.
How error code E FL differs from similar codes
The CHM495R version of E FL uses a 10-minute limit, and Quantum machines use 30 minutes with a different sensor, so the numbers differ by controller.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Is the 30-minute limit fixed?
The manual says the fill timer can be programmed off, so settings may differ from machine to machine.
Will it clear itself?
Powering down clears the display, but E FL returns if water still does not reach the level.
Is E FL a drain problem?
No. It is a fill message, so look at supply and level sensing first.
