Speed Queen Washer Error Code E SP: Motor Control Communication
E SP means the washer's master control cannot communicate with its motor control, so the cycle stops. Power down, bring it back up and try again. If E SP returns, ask us to book a technician and leave the cabinet closed.
High: the washer cannot spin without the motor control link, so the cycle stops.

What does Speed Queen error code E SP mean?
The master control decides what the washer should do, and a separate motor control spins the drum. They stay in contact through wiring, and the motor control gets its supply from a transformer. If that link is lost, the master control shows E SP and stops, because the washer cannot spin without it. The usual suspects named by the manual are a transformer that came unplugged, wiring to the motor control that was done wrong, or a protective fuse on the stacked unit. A transformer plug that came loose after a move or a service, a wiring error after board replacement, a blown fuse on the motor control board of a stacked washer/dryer, or loose connections at the control board are all in the list. A door that stays locked will release on its own, so give it a minute. The code appears on Quantum frontload washers, CHM495R washer-extractors and the older stacked washer/dryer, where it reads E:SP.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Quantum frontload washers in the FLW1535C family, CHM495R washer-extractors and the washer side of the SWD447C stacked washer/dryer. The CHM1792C uses different board messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The cycle stops and the drum does not turn
- E SP appears on the display
- The door stays locked briefly
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Transformer plug and supply to the motor control
- Wiring between master and motor control
- Fuse on the motor control board of stacked units
- Control board connections
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A motor control connector that vibrated partly out of its socket over time
- A transformer connection that overheated and lost contact at one pin
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power down the washer, bring it back up and try the cycle again.
- Leave the cabinet closed; checking wires is a technician's job.
- A door that stays locked will release on its own, so give it a minute.
- If E SP comes back, note whether it followed a move or a repair, and ask us to book a technician through the online form or by phone.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SP
- Read the code and ask about recent moves, repairs or board work.
- Verify the transformer output and the supply reaching the motor control.
- Check the wiring between the master and motor controls against the diagram.
- On stacked units, check the fuse on the motor control board.
- Check the board connections and replace only the part that fails.
- The transformer and the motor control carry higher voltage than the control board, so checks are live electrical work.
- Wiring between the two controls has to be compared with the machine's diagram.
- A blown fuse on a stacked unit points to a cause that must be found before another fuse goes in.
