Speed Queen Washer Error Code EdF4: IPM Temperature
EdF4 means the power module in a Quantum frontload washer's inverter got hotter than the drive tolerates, so the motor was shut down. The washer will not spin until it cools. Unpower it, let it cool, clear the air space around it, and call us if EdF4 returns.
High: the drive shuts down and the washer will not spin until it cools and the cause is fixed.

What does Speed Queen error code EdF4 mean?
The inverter in a Quantum frontload washer drives the motor through a power module, the IPM. That module warms up whenever it carries current, and the drive monitors its temperature. When the module gets hotter than the drive tolerates, the drive stops the motor to protect it and the display shows EdF4. Until the module cools, the washer will not spin, and a wet load may stay in the drum. Heat can build from a heavy load that makes the motor draw more current, from poor airflow around the drive, or from a motor drawing too much current for another reason. The manual points at airflow and lint around the drive, load size and drum drag, motor current, and the inverter module itself. Because heat is the trigger, the code can appear after several back-to-back cycles and then go away after a rest, which separates it from codes that appear immediately and stay.

What you may notice
- The washer will not spin and EdF4 shows
- The code appears after several heavy cycles in a row
- A wet load stays in the drum until the machine cools
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Airflow and lint around the drive
- Load size and drum drag
- Motor current
- Inverter module
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EdF4 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint packed against the inverter's cooling path from a laundry room with poor ventilation
- Back-to-back full loads that never give the drive time to shed heat
Safe checks before calling for service
- Unpower the machine and give it time to cool before trying again.
- Do not tug on the door; wait for the lock to open it.
- Clear away anything crowding the washer so air can circulate.
- If EdF4 returns, ask us to book a visit and note how many loads ran before it appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code EdF4
- Read the code and ask how many cycles ran before it appeared.
- Inspect the air path around the drive and clear lint from vents and the cooling surface, with power off.
- Turn the drum by hand to check for drag from bearings or belt.
- Measure motor current during a spin against the nameplate rating.
- Check the inverter for heat discoloration and for a cooling path that is blocked.
- Replace the inverter module only if it overheats with proven good airflow and normal motor current.
- Checking motor current means meter work around live 208-240 V wiring.
- Telling a blocked cooling path from a failing power module takes load testing under power.
- An overheated drive that is restarted repeatedly can be damaged for good.
How error code EdF4 differs from similar codes
EdF3 trips the same power module on current instead of heat. EdF4 is the temperature trip.

How long should I let it cool?
The manual only says to give it time to cool. Waiting until the cabinet feels cool and then trying one cycle is a reasonable test.
Can lint cause EdF4?
Yes, the manual lists airflow and lint around the drive as a cause. Keep the area around the washer clear, and tell us if the code returns.
Is EdF4 the same as EdF3?
No. Both stop the drive, but EdF3 is overcurrent and EdF4 is temperature of the power module.
