Speed Queen Washer Error Code E Ht: Water Did Not Reach Temperature
E Ht means the washer did not reach the programmed water temperature in about two hours. The cycle goes on, so loads may finish with cooler water than selected. Clear the code, check whether the wash water was warm, and call us if E Ht returns.
Medium: the cycle continues but the water may be cooler than selected.

- Quantum frontload (FLW1535C family) electronic control; Stacked washer/dryer (SWD447C) washer electronic control; CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control; CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb)
What does Speed Queen error code E Ht mean?
On heater models, the control gives the water a long window to reach the programmed temperature. If about two hours pass without success, it shows E Ht. The CHM495R stops at 120 minutes and shuts the heater off for the rest of the cycle. Unlike many alarms, this one does not halt the washer: the cycle goes on, which is why loads can finish with water cooler than the formula called for. That makes E Ht easy to miss until linen comes out looking or smelling wrong. The code covers a broken heating element or one that lost power, a temperature sensor that misreports the heat, water too low to cover the element, or a control output that never switches the heater on. It shows on the heater models of the Quantum frontload, the older stacked washer/dryer, where it reads E:Ht, and the CHM1792C and CHM495R washer-extractors.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers heater models of the Quantum frontload (FLW1535C family), the washer side of the SWD447C stacked washer/dryer, and CHM1792C and CHM495R washer-extractors. Unheated machines will not show it.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Loads come out cooler than the selected temperature
- The cycle finishes but with E Ht shown
- Detergent or stains do not clear as expected
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A heating element that has burned out or lost power
- A temperature sensor that misreports the water heat
- Water too low to cover the heating element
- A control output that does not switch on the heater
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E Ht on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A tripped heater breaker or fuse that leaves the element without power while the rest of the washer runs normally
- Scale built up on the element in hard water, which slows heating past the time limit
Safe checks before calling for service
- Clear the code by opening the door or pressing any keypad, per the owner's manual for the CHM1792C.
- At the end of a cycle, see whether the wash water was warm.
- Keep away from the heater wiring and panels.
- If E Ht returns, note the formula and temperature selected and how warm the water felt, and we can schedule you for a repair visit.
How a technician diagnoses error code E Ht
- Read the code and ask which formula and temperature were selected.
- Verify heater power, including the breaker and any fuses or contactors.
- Measure the element resistance and check for scale.
- Compare the temperature sensor reading with the real water temperature.
- Confirm the control output switches on the heater, then replace the failed part only.
- The heating element draws high current at line voltage, and testing it live is work for a licensed technician.
- Hot water and exposed heater terminals together are a burn and shock hazard.
- Separating a dead element from a bad sensor or output takes resistance and voltage readings under load.
How error code E Ht differs from similar codes
The CHM495R version stops at 120 minutes and turns the heater off for the rest of the cycle, so behavior after the code differs by controller.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Can I keep washing with E Ht showing?
The washer will run, but loads may not reach the heat they need, so it is best to get it checked.
Will it clear itself?
Opening the door or pressing a key clears the display, but the code returns if the heater still fails.
Why did I not notice the cycle failing?
The cycle continues, so the only sign may be cooler water or linen that does not come out as clean.
