Speed Queen Washer Error Code E LF: Water Leak During Fill
E LF means the control saw the water level climb when the fill valves were not meant to be open. Close the supply faucets if water keeps coming in, check the floor, and send us a service request.
High: a valve that does not close can overfill the tub and flood the room.

- Quantum topload (TLW13C family) electronic control; CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control; CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb)
What does Speed Queen error code E LF mean?
After a fill step ends, the control expects the water level to stay put. If the level keeps rising while the fill valves should be closed, the control assumes a valve is letting water through and shows E LF so the machine is not left filling on its own. A fill valve that fails to close all the way is the usual cause: a worn seat or a speck of grit holds it slightly open, and supply pressure does the rest. A pressure sensor that reads wrong, unusually high supply pressure, or a control output that keeps energizing the valve can produce the same reading. The risk is simple and physical: a tub that keeps filling will eventually overflow. That is why the first step is to close the supply faucets behind the machine, not to wait for the next cycle. Quantum topload washers and both washer-extractor controls report this code.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Quantum topload washers in the TLW13C family, CHM1792C washer-extractors and CHM495R washer-extractors. E Ld is the matching code for a level that drops by itself.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Water keeps running into the tub after the fill step
- Water on the floor near the washer
- E LF appears and the cycle stops
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Fill valve that leaks through when closed
- Pressure sensor reading
- Supply pressure
- Control output to the valves
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E LF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A fill valve diaphragm worn thin that lets pressure push water past it
- Water hammer on the supply line that knocks a valve seat open briefly
Safe checks before calling for service
- Close the supply faucets behind the washer if water is still coming in.
- Wait until locks release before reaching in.
- Check the floor for water and mop up anything you see.
- Keep the cabinet closed, note which cycle step you were in, and send us a service request.
How a technician diagnoses error code E LF
- Read the code and ask whether the tub was overfilled or the floor was wet.
- With the supply on and power off, check whether water still enters the tub.
- Test each fill valve for leakage when it is not energized.
- Check supply pressure against the valve rating.
- Verify the control output state and replace the valve only after the leak test.
- The fill valves are wired behind the panels at line voltage, and testing them live is work for a licensed technician.
- A tub left to overfill can flood the room and reach electrical equipment.
- Finding which of several valves is leaking takes controlled testing with the supply open.
How error code E LF differs from similar codes
E Ld is the reverse case, a level that falls when no drain is running.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Should I close the faucets?
Yes. If water keeps coming in with the machine idle, closing the supply protects the floor.
Can the washer fill by itself after the cycle?
With a leaking valve it can, which is why the control raises E LF.
Is high water pressure a cause?
It can push water past a worn valve seat, so we measure supply pressure during the visit.
