Speed Queen Commercial Washer Error Code E dL2: Door Will Not Unlock
E dL2 on a CHM1792C washer-extractor means the cycle finished but the door lock did not release, and the START light is flashing. Press START once to let the control try the unlock again. If the door stays locked, do not pull on it; the lock, its switch or the output board needs a technician.
Medium: the cycle is done but the load is locked inside until the door releases.

What does Speed Queen error code E dL2 mean?
The CHM1792C control locks the door before a cycle and is supposed to release it when the cycle ends. After the last step it energizes the unlock output and then looks at the door inputs to confirm the lock actually let go. When the lock still reports itself as engaged, the control stops waiting and shows E dL2, which the manual lists as a non-fatal door unlock error. Non-fatal means the machine is not damaged; it simply cannot hand the load back to you. Pressing START makes the control repeat its unlock attempts. If the second round fails as well, the control has done everything it can from the front, and the remaining possibilities sit in the lock hardware, the switch that reports its position, or the unlock circuit on the board. Until the lock lets go, the washed load stays inside the drum.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the CHM1792C family washer-extractor front-end control, the QN models in the 20 to 100 pound range. Other Speed Queen controls word their door messages differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The START light flashes after the cycle has ended
- The door will not open at the end of the wash
- The load stays in the drum after the final spin
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A lock solenoid or wiring that holds the door shut
- A latch and strike binding against each other
- An unlock circuit on the output board that has failed
- A door switch that wrongly reports the lock state
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E dL2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A door that sits slightly out of line, so the strike presses against the latch and keeps the lock from retracting
- A lock solenoid that has weakened from years of heavy daily cycles and no longer pulls the latch free on the first try
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press START once, as the owner's manual says, and let the control repeat its unlock attempts.
- Wait a minute without touching the door.
- Do not pull on the door or try to bypass its switch, because forcing the latch can break it.
- Note whether the door was bumped, slammed or loaded against during the cycle, and tell us what the display and the flashing light were doing.
How a technician diagnoses error code E dL2
- Read the code and confirm the START light behavior, then press START and watch whether the lock energizes.
- Check for a door that has dropped or shifted, and look at how the latch meets the strike with power off.
- Measure the lock solenoid coil and its wiring for continuity and voltage when the unlock is commanded.
- Test the door switch signal against the lock position it should report.
- Check the output board unlock circuit before condemning the board, and replace only the part that fails its test.
- The lock circuit carries line-voltage control wiring behind the front panel, and testing it live is work for a trained technician.
- A latch forced open on a full machine can damage the door frame and leave the load trapped with water behind it.
- Telling a bad lock from a bad switch or board takes meter readings with the door in a known position.

Related Speed Queen washer error codes
Why is the START light flashing?
The control has stopped its unlock attempts and is waiting for you. Pressing START tells it to try again.
Can I pull the door open?
No. Forcing the latch can break it, and a door opened against the lock leaves the machine needing a bigger repair. Call us instead.
Will it clear itself?
Sometimes a second try releases a sticky latch, but if E dL2 comes back on later cycles, the lock or its switch is wearing out and should be checked.
