Speed Queen CHM495R Washer Error Code Ed06: Drive Overheating
Ed06 on a Design 2 or 3 CHM495R washer-extractor is a thermal error: the drive's IPM power module got too hot. Power down and let it cool, keep clutter away so air can move, and set up a technician visit if it returns.
High: the drive shuts down to protect itself, so the machine cannot run until it cools and the cause is fixed.

What does Speed Queen error code Ed06 mean?
Every motor drive makes heat, and the CHM495R drive carries a heat sink to shed it. The control watches the temperature of the IPM power module, and when it climbs too high, the drive stops to protect itself and the display shows Ed06. Only Design 2 and 3 machines report it, so check the model label. The owner's manual says to power down and verify convection, meaning air movement, around the drive heat sink. Lint and a hot room make it worse. The causes follow from that: a restricted airflow path past the heat sink, lint packed onto the heat sink, a drum that drags and keeps the drive working hard, or a drive board whose power module runs too hot. A washer-extractor crowded against a wall or stacked with laundry carts blocks the air it needs. This is also why the machine may run again after it cools and trip once more a few cycles later. The temperature trip is real protection, so it should not be defeated.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Design 2 and Design 3 machines of the CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control. Ed04 and Ed08 cover other motor-side stops on the same drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The washer stops mid-cycle and sits idle
- Ed06 appears, often after several hot loads in a row
- The drive area feels warm
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A restricted airflow path past the drive heat sink
- Lint packed onto the drive heat sink
- A drum that drags and keeps the drive working hard
- A drive board whose power module runs too hot
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed06 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A laundry room that gets hot in summer afternoons, so the cabinet air is already warm
- Carts or shelving parked close enough to the cabinet to starve the drive of air
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power down the machine, as the owner's manual says, and let it cool.
- Only open the door after the lock releases.
- Keep clutter away from the machine so air can move.
- If the code returns, note the room temperature and how many loads ran before it stopped, and set up a technician visit.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed06
- Read the code and ask about the room, the loads and the airflow around the cabinet.
- Inspect the drive heat sink and air path for lint and blockage, with power off.
- Check that the drum turns freely and does not drag.
- Measure drive and motor current under load.
- Replace the drive board only after airflow and drag are ruled out.
- Cleaning a heat sink means opening a cabinet that holds energized high-voltage parts.
- A dragging drum and a hot drive look alike, so we measure current under load.
- Handling the drive board requires discharge procedures and proper tools.

Will it run again after it cools?
Usually yes, but if the airflow or drag problem remains, it trips again.
Can I run it in a hot room?
A hot room and lint make Ed06 more likely, so give the cabinet air and clear the lint.
Is Ed06 the same as Ed04?
No. Ed04 is a motor that never reached speed; Ed06 is the drive running too hot.
