Speed Queen CHM495R Washer Error Code Ed08: Max Overcurrent
Ed08 on a Design 2 or 3 CHM495R washer-extractor is a max overcurrent error: the motor output reached the highest current the drive allows. Switch the machine off and on, try one cycle with a lighter load, and contact us if it returns.
High: the drive stops the motor, and a repeat points at a motor, wiring or drive problem.

What does Speed Queen error code Ed08 mean?
Each drive has a ceiling for the current it will send to the motor. When the motor output reaches that highest current, the drive stops to protect itself and the display shows Ed08, and the load stays in the drum until the machine is cleared. This applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. The owner's manual says to power down and up. The question to ask is whether the code was a one-time surge or a pattern. A repeat points at a motor, wiring or drive problem rather than a one-time surge. The manual's causes are a motor or motor leads drawing the maximum current, a drum that drags and pulls heavy current, and a drive board that cannot limit the motor current. A lighter load is a good first test, because a heavily loaded drum asks the motor for more current, and if the code goes away with half a load, the mechanical drag is the place to look, while a code that returns even on an empty drum points at the motor or the drive.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Design 2 and Design 3 machines of the CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control. Ed05 is the separate IGBT overcurrent code from the same drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The motor stops during start or spin
- Ed08 appears under a heavy load
- The load remains in the drum
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- A motor or motor leads drawing the maximum current
- A drum that drags and pulls heavy current
- A drive board that cannot limit the motor current
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed08 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A drum seal or bearing that has grown tight and draws more current as it warms up
- An oversized load of wet linen that pushes the motor to its limit each time
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off, then on, as the owner's manual says.
- The door comes open only after the lock lets go, so give it time.
- Try one cycle with a lighter load.
- If the code returns, note the load size and how often it happens, and contact us for a visit.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed08
- Read the code and ask about load size and how often it repeats.
- Run a light-load test and see whether the code follows the load.
- Check that the drum spins freely and the bearings are sound.
- Measure the motor current and the winding condition.
- Replace the motor or drive board only after the drag is ruled out.
- Measuring motor current under load is live work on a high-power circuit.
- A drum that drags may point to a failing bearing, which takes lifting and special tools.
- Separating a motor problem from a drive problem takes current readings and winding tests.
How error code Ed08 differs from similar codes
Ed05 reports a shunt overcurrent in the power switches, while Ed08 reports the motor output reaching the highest current the drive allows.

Can I keep using the machine after Ed08?
Try one lighter load. If it returns, stop, since repeated overcurrent can damage the drive.
Is Ed08 caused by a bad motor?
It can be, but a dragging drum is also on the manual's list.
Is it the same as Ed05?
No. They are both overcurrent codes, but they come from different checks on the drive.
