Speed Queen CHM495R Washer Error Code Ed09: Current Sensor

Ed09 on a Design 2 or 3 CHM495R washer-extractor is a current sensor error: the sensor that measures motor current was not operating properly at startup. Cycle the power off and on, try one cycle, and keep customers away if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: without a current reading the drive cannot protect the motor, so the cycle does not begin.

What does Speed Queen error code Ed09 mean?

Before it runs the motor, the drive checks the sensor that measures motor current. That reading is how it protects the motor from overload. If the sensor is not operating properly at start-up, the drive cannot protect the motor, so it stops and the cycle does not begin. The display shows Ed09, which Design 2 and 3 machines report. The owner's manual says to power down and up to clear it. The causes are few: a current sensor on the drive that is not working at start-up, a drive board with a failed current measuring circuit, or an unsteady supply to the drive during start-up. The last one matters, because a sensor can read badly for a moment when the incoming power is unstable. A machine that sometimes runs and sometimes shows Ed09 on a restart suggests the supply, while a machine that shows Ed09 every time points at the drive board itself. Either way, it is not a good idea to run the motor without a current reading.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers Design 2 and Design 3 machines of the CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control. Ed08 and Ed05 are the overcurrent codes that depend on this reading.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The cycle does not begin after power-up
  • Ed09 appears at start
  • The machine runs sometimes after a restart

Possible causes

Listed in Speed Queen's documentation

  • A current sensor on the drive that is not working at startup
  • A drive board with a failed current measuring circuit
  • An unsteady supply to the drive during start-up

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A building supply that sags when other equipment starts at the same moment
  • A drive board circuit weakened by heat from repeated hot loads

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Cycle the power off and on, following the owner's manual.
  2. Keep the door shut until the lock has released.
  3. Try one cycle.
  4. If the code returns, ask us to schedule service, keep customers away from the machine, and note what the display showed.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed09

  1. Read the code and confirm the machine is a Design 2 or 3.
  2. Measure the supply to the drive at start-up for dips.
  3. Power-cycle and see whether Ed09 repeats on every start.
  4. Inspect the drive connections around the current sensing circuit.
  5. Replace the drive board only after the supply is steady and the code persists.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Checking the supply at start-up is live measurement on a high-power circuit.
  • The current sensing circuit is inside the drive board, which a technician replaces as a unit.
  • Running the motor without a current reading is unsafe for the drive and motor.

Ed09Questions about Speed Queen error code Ed09
Why can't the machine run without the current reading?

The drive needs it to protect the motor, so it stops instead.

Will powering down clear Ed09?

The manual says it does, but a repeat points at the supply or the drive board.

Is Ed09 a motor problem?

Not directly. It concerns the sensor that reads motor current, not the motor itself.
