Speed Queen Washer Error Code E:01: Wand Too Far or Misaligned
E:01 on older EDC topload washers is a proximity error. The Micro-wand IIIe was not lined up, or was held too far from the control's infra-red communicator. Move the wand closer, line it up, and try the exchange again.
Low: only the wand exchange fails; the washer keeps washing.

What does Speed Queen error code E:01 mean?
A Micro-wand IIIe exchanges information with the control through an infra-red window that works only at close range and with a straight line of sight. The control watches for that signal at the start of a programming or audit attempt. If the signal comes in too weak or from the wrong angle, the control decides the wand is not near enough and reports a proximity problem as E:01 (display text: E:01). In practice that means no clean exchange happened at all. Only programming and audit contact is affected, because the washer keeps its settings and its normal wash cycles. The manual lists the same ideas an operator would think of: the wand's distance and angle, a weak wand battery, and a smudged window. Customers are not held up by this message. It belongs to an older timer-type topload line that is still in service, and we repair it. A fresh attempt, with the wand held close and square to the window, solves it in most cases.
Affected models and control systems
Older Speed Queen timer-type topload washers with the EDC electronic control (Micro-wand IIIe programming). Newer Quantum washers use a different code set.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E:01 on the display
- The wand exchange fails right at the start
- The washer still washes normally
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Wand held too far from the infra-red communicator
- Wand tilted away from the control window
- Weak battery in the wand
- Smudged communicator window blocking the signal
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E:01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A wand carried in a pocket with keys, so its lens is scratched
- A control window fogged by humid laundry-room air
Safe checks before calling for service
- Line up the Micro-wand IIIe with the communicator and move it closer, as the owner's manual says.
- Keep it steady during the exchange.
- Try again after wiping the window.
- If E:01 returns, request service and tell us what the display showed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E:01
- Confirm E:01 appears at the start of each attempt.
- Test with a second wand and fresh batteries.
- Check the window for scratches, film or cracks.
- Try the exchange at a measured short distance, straight on.
- Check the control's receiver only after the tool and window pass.
- The infra-red receiver is on the control, behind a cover with live line voltage.
- Telling a weak wand from a weak receiver needs a known good wand and the right comparison.
- Any setting rewritten through the wand has to be matched to this machine's original values.
How error code E:01 differs from similar codes
E:01 is a proximity error like E:09 and E:0A; each is listed separately in the manual.
