Speed Queen Washer Error Code E:09: Wand Pointed Away
E:09 on older EDC topload washers is another proximity error. The Micro-wand IIIe was not lined up with the control's infra-red communicator, so the exchange did not happen. Customers are not held up; point the wand again and hold it close.
Low: only the wand exchange fails; customers are not held up.

What does Speed Queen error code E:09 mean?
The control can only answer the Micro-wand IIIe when the infra-red window sees the wand clearly. At the start of an exchange it listens for the wand's signal. When the signal is not found because the wand is pointed away or sits too far off, the control reports a proximity problem under the number E:09 (display text: E:09). This is one of several proximity entries in the manual, each listed under its own number. Only the programming or audit conversation is affected, and the washer keeps its settings and its normal wash cycles. The manual lists the same ideas as the others in the group: the wand's aim and distance, a flat battery, and a dirty window. Older timer-type toploads like this one are still in use, and our technicians repair them. Nothing about the water system, motor or lid is described. When a careful attempt with a fresh battery still fails, the wand or the window is the first place to look.
Affected models and control systems
Older Speed Queen timer-type topload washers with the EDC electronic control (Micro-wand IIIe programming). Newer Quantum washers use a different code set.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Wand pointed away from the infra-red communicator
- Wand held too far from the control
- Flat battery in the programming wand
- Dust or grime on the communicator window
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E:09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A cover or sticker over the control window cutting the signal
- A wand stored in a hot cabinet that has weakened its battery
Safe checks before calling for service
- Point the Micro-wand at the communicator, as the owner's manual says.
- Hold it close and steady until the exchange is done.
- Try again after wiping the window with a dry cloth.
- If E:09 returns, request a visit and tell us whether the wand has ever worked on this washer.
How a technician diagnoses error code E:09
- Confirm E:09 at the very start of the attempt.
- Check the wand with fresh batteries on a second machine.
- Inspect the control window for film, stickers or damage.
- Test the exchange straight on at close range.
- Check the receiver in the control only after the wand works elsewhere.
- Access to the receiver means opening the control area at line voltage.
- A good wand on another machine is the only way to separate a tool problem from a receiver problem.
- Settings written to the control must match the machine's own records.
How error code E:09 differs from similar codes
E:09 is a proximity entry like E:01 and E:0A, listed separately by the maker.
